Dog Needs Knee Surgery

DTM74

It's not my fault...
Hey BARF,

So my dog Jake has a partial tear to his cruciate ligament (ACL) as shown on the vet's x-ray. We tried to keep him quiet for a week and on Rimadyl to see if he showed improvement but vet suggested we take him to Davis, Sage (Concord) for a consultation as they no longer do that surgery.

Haven't heard too many good things about Sage. Davis, we have sort of a love/hate relationship with them. So asking teh BARFs...if you've had a pooch that needed knee surgery, where did you take them? Satisfied with their work?

TIA

I would try UC Davis vet hospital if at all possible. They do wonderful things for special needs animals. Gracie initially had some of her eye consults there and now sees an eye specialist in Rocklin. But I was referred to UC Davis 1st. Definitely worth a try IMO and good luck to you and your puppy.

Our Dobie boxer mix has had three. She likes to have her surgeries +/- 3 months before or after a move just to keep it interesting.

Long story short, we brought her to Claremont veterinary hospital in Oakland 3 days after arriving in Alameda. Older doctor, very cut to the point kind of a guy, but also the best surgery out of all three of them. He didn't keep her overnight like the other two did but we already knew what to do and what to expect as it was the third time for us and Kota.

I would not even hesitate to take her back if she needed another.

Good luck! The recovery and keeping them somewhat calm with limited movement is the worst.

Feel free to PM with any questions.

I had a very good experience with UC Davis when one of my dogs had jaw cancer and needed surgery. Best wishes for Jake's recovery.

San Leandro has the VCA specialist practice. My 125 lbs anatolian need to fix her knee. she got the plates put in (only option for a dog that big) and they did a great job. didn't limp, even right after surgery. Could be someone closer to you, not sure where you are located. You can call and see who they recommend in your zip code.

Thanks guys. I'm located in Fairfield. We've had (2) dogs that have required this surgery. We took one to our local vet but they no longer do the procedure. The other we took to UC Davis.

Just after a bad experience at UC Davis with our cat, they weren't high on my list. I know they do good work but as a teaching hospital, sometimes they are not the most practical option. "It can be a curse and a blessing" as one of the Dr.'s told me off the record.

I don't know, we'll see. I can have my vet send Davis his x-rays and have a consultation. I'll also call the place in Oakland.

thanks all

One of my boys needed it. Our vet did it. Right here in Mt. View. He has been AOK for 4 years. I bet some still do it.

I don’t have a recommendation in the 707.

Hope Jake heals up fully. Shit ain’t cheap, but dogs are part of the family here and we do whatever it take for family.

Good luck.

Had this done almost a year ago for my dog at warm springs pet hospital in Fremont. They have an out the door price for the procedure (does not include follow up visits). They were very up front on pricing which I found refreshing compared to several other vets I talked to in the area.

They did a great job on the surgery. Vet tech missed a couple of stitch removals on follow up. Not that big of a deal if you're not squeamish.

Hope everything works out well for your pup!
