Do You Own Gold?

Do you own gold as part of your retirement or savings strategy? Do you think owning gold is a good idea or a bad idea?

I own gold and I'll tell you why. It to me is a hedge against inflation. It helps my savings retain it's value. I don't expect to get rich from it. Hers is a gold analogy I like. In the early 19 hundreds you could buy a Ford model T for 15 ounces of gold. Today you can still buy a lot of different Ford cars or trucks for the same 15 ounces of gold.

The types of gold I own are various size gold bars, different gold bullion coins and pre 1933 U.S gold coins bought at a low premium. I keep my gold in a safe.

I do own stocks and bonds to grow my money but I have so much more fun stacking gold. As a child I collected coins and still love the old gold coins that can be purchased for a little above spot gold price now.

Do you like gold? Stack gold? Or is investing in gold a bad idea?

Yes. I own the same amount of gold I bought back at under $400 an ounce. I probably won't sell it. It's about 2% of my investment holdings.

Physical gold? meh

You have to purchase at retail and can only sell wholesale. Then there is the problem of secure storage and market timing.

Collector's coinage? Too many sharks in that sea for me.

Investing in Gold Funds and Gold Future Options is a better strategy and I definitely like it.

I used to have a few coins and some 3oz bars but sold it all with my silver around five years ago.
Probably not a bad idea to have some coins but I ran out patience waiting for the world to end.

Gold is less of a gamble. It's always worth about the same value. So you don't win and you don't lose.

And yeah, I used to have a lot of gold, but mostly in numismatics such as various gold coins, American Eagles, etc.

Now that I am retired, I have no interest in saving money. I enjoy spending it a lot more than saving it these days!

You want to guess what on?:laughing

If you buy 1 ounce or larger, you pay only the premium, which is pretty small.

Don't buy gold to sell. Stick it in a safe place and forget it.

I'm still waiting, but beginning to think I won't see it. :laughing

Gold on the market is great to buy when you think a pandemic is going to hit and then dump later.

I inherited a chunk of this stuff from my pops. Been on the move but not a big swinger like stocks. I doubt I would ever buy real gold.
