My son was sited for cvc 22500 (i) - stopping and unloading a passenger in a bus zone in sf

Thing is he was never physically handed the ticket or asked to move along - we just got the ticket in the mail along with a photo of the car.

He most likely did it - he was in the city at that time and does use the bus lane at times for this purpose - but he never leaves the car.

He paid the fine after 1st appeal was denied - we're trying to decide if it's worth also doing the written appeal.

What do the barf wizards and Leos recommend??

Thanks

You have to pay or contest. The ticket is valid.

Weird you posted this because the same exact ticket he got was showcased on KRON4 people behaving badly.

Your son was caught behaving badly xD

Parking tickets are civil in California. Yes it is valid. No you don't have to be physically handed it or sign anything. You can't go to jail or get an arrest warrant from them and they are collected or challenged civilly.

Non-parking notice to appear citations are criminal in nature. They must be signed in person or else the officer has to take the violator before a magistrate, which means jail in most, if not all, counties. Failure to pay/appear will result in an arrest warrant.

Thanks Bojangle - this was precisely what I was pondering.

Thanks all to the input - yes good-bye kid's paycheck indeed - $288 fine.

Gawernator - fair points and indeed my son may have been behaving badly - he has learned his lesson (I will try and find that KRON segment :teeth).

My personal frustration re SF driving and trying to park/pullover, is that there is sooo little/zero places, that to me I would rather have someone pull into an empty bus zone, unload/load their passenger 1min-like, and then pull away. If a bus happens along at that time, they honk and then the driver moves elsewhere immediately. That's certainly preferred IMHO over the double-parking you see all over/willy-nilly. This citation felt more like an ambush by the traffic patrol - like a red-light camera you don't know about.

Just my two cents - I actually prefer to take uber/lyft rather than drive in the city b/c of the mess that is parking...sounds like maybe the city is targeting said ride-share drivers who are using the bus zones....

/off my soapbox/ thx as always barfers :thumbup:thumbup
I need to get another bigger bike so I can :ride to SF when needed :thumbup

That's not entirely accurate, collision notice citations and complaint signed citations are issued without the violators signature and are valid

Well yeah the ticket is a 100% money maker for the state/city lol. It's not like he blocked a bus from operating. They just want our money

where did the picture come from? aren't they from buses--e.g. he *did* block a bus from operating.
it may only have been for a second or two, but it happens enough for longer periods of time enough that they built this system. and i guess are gonna use it, no matter if it's for a second (who cares) or a minute (that does cause real delays).

Seriously! It's not like we need to follow the rules of society, even when we think nobody else is affected....
