Do you have that person that says 'um' 'ah' on your phone call?

It's kinda annoying if it's clear, distinct, in a quiet room.

That one person that says "So I did, .. uAaah this and then UUUh that." . All you can hear is

In English we say "um", "er", "ah", or other vocalisations for reasons that linguists are not entirely sure about.

Happy Wednesday!

Never really annoyed me when this happens in a phone conversation (until seeing this thread :p)... BUT when doing that during a presentation, speech, demo, ...etc it is like nails on a chalkboard to me. :p

I had in mind somebody that is especially pronounced on the Uum, because other words are somehow always spoken softer. : |

I wonder if she's translating something all the time.

I feel like I am the only person on earth that still talks on the phone.

Well people don't talk ON the phone really, usually they talk on a white piece of wire held by two fingers, while kinking their neck to come closer to its microphone.

Required presentation at work:

2 presenters and neither of them could speak more than two or three syllables without *uhm* blah blah *uhm* blah *uhm* ...

It was excruciating. I got told off after I suggested that they go through it a few times first - as a continuous improvement marker.

I've found I've switched from saying um or uhh as much to just having my words overrun each other. Talking too fast to bother with ums and uhhs

Actively thinking about slowing down happens a lot, especially talking about something technical.

Well, the net net is, if you know what I mean, umm, some people just can't, you know, hear themselves and such.

And then forget why they called you.

I've heard this.. :) I think it's that one or two friends who call during the way back home from work. And ummm , after the silence : "Um, so how are you doing?"
