Do GoPros cause brain injuries?

Michael Schumacher’s Brain Injury Said to Be Caused by Helmet-Mounted GoPro
http://unofficialnetworks.com/2014/...ury-said-to-be-caused-by-his-gopro-helmet-cam

Experts from ENSA, the world-renowned ski and climbing academy in the French ski resort of Chamonix, have conducted tests to determine whether the presence of a solid object between a helmet colliding with a rock would weaken the structure. [...]

“The helmet completely broke. It was in at least two parts. ENSA analysed the piece of the helmet to check the material, and all was OK,” said a source close to the investigation. “But why did it explode on impact? Here the camera comes into question. The laboratory has been testing to see if the camera weakened the structure.”

I don't see how under certain impact scenarios it wouldn't be a negative.

I think it would depend on how it's mounted. If the mounts cause stress risers in the shell of a lid then yeah, I can see it compromising the integrity of the helmet. /armchair engineer.

there is no possible way anyone from the ENSA is going to perfectly reproduce the impact that destroyed that specific helmet. could tacking any camera onto a helmet make it weaker, definitely. can a helmet explode without a cam on it, of course. ive personally seen a few, ski and bicycle helmets sans GoPro. im starting to doubt that these researches will draw the correct conclusions from their study.

They don't have to do any sort of study to understand pressure over surface area, be it on the person, or the things people run into. Ban all the non-flat things!

It would be interesting to see how well the camera body absorbs energy. I can't imagine anyone willing to bay the lab time to smash a bunch of cameras and helmets though to find out.

Not true. That is about one of the easiest tests there can be. Mount a weighted helmet on a pendulum with the mounting bracket on the strike point and tests it at different speeds and heights until it breaks. You could replicate the tests with and without the mounts/camera and see what happens. Very easy.

I thought this was going to be about people mounting them and that causing them to do extra stupid shit because of being on camera.

I can see that for sure!

“There are reputable sources indicating that GoPro cameras may interfere with avalanche beacons, making them a potential hazard to those who use the cameras while participating in snow sports,” said Steve Berman, managing partner of Hagens Berman.

One report suggests that the cameras may interfere not only with the transmission of the rescue signal, but also with the ability of searcher equipment to locate an avalanche victim.

sometimes lawyers really crack me up - why don't you say who your reputable sources are?

and youre absolutely positive that the test that damaged Schumacher's brain is the one that just breaks the helmet w/ a GoPro on it? what about impacts stronger than that? what about the fact that ull get diff results between each test, just take the avg?
