Discussion on Masks

So, many have bought and are wearing masks for Covid-19.

But, the aspects that make many masks effective at helping to prevent the spread of covid-19 aren't necesarily what will keep smoke and tiny particles out of your lungs.

If you've been wearing paper, cloth, bandana, multi-layered cloth or other masks, they may be almost useless at keeping the under micron particles of dust out.

What you need is an N95, N99 or equivalent to keep tiny particles out.

But some of you will say, But Covid-19 is smaller. Yes, it is, but the particle by itself won't survive in the air, they are usually part of small globules.

Here are the masks that will and won't keep you safe in the smoke

I think they're bad for corona because they often have a valve that makes breathing out easier but also easier to expel the virus.

You're gonna need to elaborate on how n95s are bad for disease prevention, unless you're just trying to tell people to save them for healthcare workers.

I just think that, for the past six months. not a single person in my "essential" office has gotten so much as a sniffle, much less the 'rona, with us all wearing masks and being careful.

I'm for 'em even tho I hate wearing them.

I read that initial theory from New England Jour of Medicine yesterday that masks MIGHT be responsible for building immunity by making exposure minimal. So even tho the rona is getting through, it's not enough to win but rather helping our bodies adjust and fight it.

Even if the theory is proven false, I want to promote it just so everybody will keep their damn masks on.

Fuck yeah. :thumbup

I have been working in a mask mandatory shop since like week 2 of Covid. We are all doing pretty well so far.

sorry, I should have said n95 with or without flaps are good for protecting you but the ones with flaps are not good for protecting others if you have it.

By contrast, we've all been wearing masks and one guy got it but did not spread it to anyone else. Masks work.

I think it's stupid that medical professionals that get interviewed by news stations are saying wear N95 masks when the air quality outside is unhealthy but it is still difficult to buy N95 masks if you do not work in the medical/dental business or organizations on the front lines responding to covid-19.

btw, I read in the Amazon.com comments that KN95 is not equivalent to N95. KN95 is China's standard

Be Here Now
Got an infection in my throat from inhaling poison oak 2 years ago during fire season.

Worst pain I've experienced to date.

Wore neck gaiters before that, now I wear N95s without the valve if I'm going outside.

I've got a pair of N100s coming. They have the exhale valve but it can be taped/blocked closed. I am drowning in mucus these past few weeks and hope wearing them will help with that.

If it loops around your ears, it'll be un-wearably uncomfortable if its pulling hard enough to seal the edge. I think that's the actual problem. At this point, I'd be 0% surprised if china is using knockoff material and making masks that aren't actually rated to n95, but the ones with ear loops and not 2 head straps are definitely leaking on you.

Been working out of my home M-F since about March or so. Company does not see any need for me to come to the office until after the first of the year and maybe not until March (Company is in Santa Clara, I'm in Ukiah).

We don't leave the house very often and when we do, it is quick trips to local stores or take-out restaurants. Masks required.

I have difficulty wearing masks, hard for me to breathe. I put the mask on just before entering an establishment, remove it as soon as I exit. This may be due to my 10 or so years using a CPAP device, my diaphragm I think is a bit weaker than normal since it doesn't have to work when I breathe while sleeping (slight atrophy I think).

At 71 I'm in the so-called "vulnerable" category. Not worried in the least since we are rarely in groups of people and we keep our distance.

I read that as well. So we will need to wear masks permanently from now on to reduce the number of regular flu deaths annually.

Go away with your whataboutism's. :thumbdown

We've all heard your over-exaggerated claims and ridiculous statements. It accomplishes nothing but make everybody look at you sideways.

It's tiring hearing everything turned into propaganda by a member here.
