May as well add Idaho to the list. :teeth

Consider making part of all of the BDR (Backcountry Discovery Route) the route to ride in each of these states.

Add Rock Creek near Georgetown to your local list.

Be more specific. Which actual campground in any of those places meets our needs?:
Large enough to accommodate our group
Private (to keep the riff raff out, as Butch would say)
Running water
Bathrooms
Accesses an easily navigable trail system with terrain to satisfy a variety of skill levels

In my opinion Stonyford is already about as far as many people are willing to drive. If you plan something in SoCal, Nevada, or beyond, participation will drop off dramatically.

The real reason that we have only been throwing around ideas and putting it off is that no one has taken action. The reason StonyBARF works is that Butch takes the reins. He picks the dates and he books it, and people either come or they don't. Debating what the best place might be on BARF/Facebook over and over doesn't actually accomplish anything.

Everyone will never agree 100% on a time and place. So if you (OP or anyone else) has a site you feel strongly about as a great replacement for StonyBARF while Stonyford is closed, pick a weekend and plan it out. If you build it, they will come.

Yeah I know how the Stonybarf trips work as Butch and I organized the first 5 or 6 of em. life happened and I haven't made the most recent ones but thanks for the info:thumbup

This is just supposed to be a place where we can figure this out collectively which is how Stonyford happened too.

Oh, sweet, so then you already know what I'm talking about AND you have prior experience doing it. We need a camping dictator to lead us, I think it's you.

Here's my opinion, since you asked:

I don't know of a place that meets all those criteria I listed above, which we previously enjoyed at Stony.

Scott's suggestion of Georgetown (Rock Creek OHV) is a good one. It's pretty close to the Bay Area, there is plenty of camping space at the Mace Mill staging area, there are bathrooms, and it's a fun trail system.
BUT, the problem is that there are no reserved sites, so someone would have to get there early on Thursday afternoon and block off a big area for all of us. Which could be kind of tricky, since that place gets crowded if it's a nice weekend.

You know how butch and I selected dates for stony? The Farmers almanac :laughing I would find the most common weekends with rain. Georgetown sounds good and I think we could make it work

I’ll add my 2 cents. Of all the places listed the only one that makes sense is hollister. One of the primary goals of these trips is to make it inclusive for all riding abilities. I’m afraid Georgetown only accommodates intermediate to advanced riders. When we rode there we saw a couple groups over their head and exhausted.

I understand your concern about hollister being in people’s backyard and bailing after the ride. My bet is that won’t happen because people have come to love the comraderie around the campfire more than the riding.

I've been thinking about this as well. Just got jammed up with projects in the city this past month and havent had any bandwidth to dedicate to it.

Here are my thoughts. Stonybarf was successful these past few years as it was accessible to wide variety of riders and very welcoming to new folks to the group. The last part is important to me. I've met so many folks over the years that I continue to ride with that were complete strangers before the Stonybarf event.

There really isnt anywhere that can replace the private campground experience we were so lucky to have at Stonyford. That sucks, but reality until it opens again.

I agree with Wiles and Stangz, Hollister is probably going to be our best bet for having a decent campground, close proximity to most Barf members, and a wide variety of terrain to get the biggest turn out. The turnout and people is most important to me, even over the riding. Madrone Campground would be ideal. It could be HolliBarf until Stony reopens. :laughing There are smaller rides camping being organized through the spring. But I'd LOVE to see a big campout with cocktails, bonfire, and new faces.

There a few of us that could go down a day early to stake out space for the group. Maybe we try to organize before the end of red sticker season.

I'll be back up in Lake County early next week with a bit of free time if you want to chat Tuesday evening. These are just my thoughts and opinions.

In the (not to distant) past our community had a ride organizer who would organize "newbie" rides at Hollister Hills.
These would include a Saturday morning lead and swept ride of newbie riders, on a preset course, to help with skills and introduction to Hollister. Hundereds came to these events over a few years.
He would get the co-operation of the Hollister Hills Rangers and block off most of Radio Ridge (ribbon tape and closed signs) just for the weekend event... and camping.
Unfortunately for us this awesome guy has moved to the foothills and no longer jumps through the many hoops to get an event like the above organized.

I know this is a different "venue" but it "may" be possible to work with the Hollister Hills Rangers to designate a group area just for the temp.relocate.StonyBARF event.

Edit to add...
I even made (and still have) a portable bar for these weekend campouts.

My vote is just plan a weekend before red sticker season at Hollister.

Not perfect, but it will be a temporary replacement until we can get back to Stony.

hollister could work. the guy i usually rent a travel trailer from lives in gilroy and he will drop off campers there. if people wanted to go in and didnt wanna tent camp someone could arrive early have him set up the trailers and that would establish our camp. we would have to get there on a thursday afternoon or morning to get a spot big enough. walnut campground is ideal because bathrooms and showers. that or at the end of radio ridge would be ideal too.

Plus 1 for Forest Hill. Versatile for all riders. Decent amenities. Lake option for families. More enjoyable to ride.

Hollister is cool...but trail 5/6!! FH is equally as accessible as Stony.

China Wall would be sweet, there's usually nobody there, or one/two trucks at the most. It has bathrooms, tons of room, big paved area and some spots in the woods if one wanted to tent camp. It's a killer hangout spot except the trails out of there aren't beginner friendly.

I think...Rock Creek/ Georgetown would be awesome. But yeah, someone who knows the place would have to go up Thursday and rope off an area, then it would be a roll of the dice for fitment.

I would love to do that, but cannot.
We can prolly do Stony next September.

I am not familiar with China Wall.

Yup, we always stage at China wall.
If you have a plated bike and like sliding on knobbies, there are incredible supermoto roads all down in the valley and mosquito ridge Rd.

Not to be a wise guy or anything, but a simple Google search will show you the staging areas: http://lmgtfy.com/?q=foresthill+staging+area

The Sugar Pine area is most centrally located relative to most of the trails.

yeah obvi :twofinger but people with the experience is better. i wouldve never known gray pines was as good as it was and has been on the stony trips without recommendations from other barfers. I wanted to actually camp at letts when Butch and I were organizing the first trip. Probably a good thing we didnt being that we got 6 inches of snow in gray pines and it was over a foot up there :laughing
