Anyone running the Dipsea trail race from Mill Valley over Mt Tamalpias to Stinson Beach?

Its a epic race with lots of climbing, technical down hills, shortcuts allowed, and a unique handy cap/head start system.

Volunteered at the finish lines. Saw a lot of runners with skinned legs from slips and falls :)

Teeple's Steeple (Teeple's Choice) is named after a good friend of mine. Are you sure shortcuts are allowed? He was DQ'd for it after all...

I ran it 3 or 4 years in the early eighties. I was always top 100 which made me invitational and getting a T shirt. Top finish was something in the top 50 handicapped and top 80 unhandicapped, or something like that. Been a long time.

Basically it's a really really tough climb up from Mill Valley, fucking grueling. Then, if you want to place, you discard all sensitivity and fear of risk (lots of broken limbs in this race) and just go full out downhill, which means, in the rocky places, leaping as far as you can downhill and hoping you can find and strike a stable spot for your next pace. If you can't do this, you're not competitive.

Now if you want tough, do the double Dipsea. I did it one year with my idol, Walt Stack http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walt_Stack

Yes, shortcuts are allowed. The race has always been between Mill Valley and Stinson Beach with the route optional. Over the years the Dipsea trail itself evolved as the best option and private property narrowed the options, but there are still well known shortcuts that the winners take. Violating private property is prohibited. The known shortcuts are torturous especially during race conditions, so its good there is a easy option for the less confident runners.

One of the shortcuts that I'm taking is called Suicide. I would not recommend it unless you are really good at running down very steep terrain.

My sister has done that race a bunch of times. She's one of those extreme runners though (numerous 100 miles races to her credit).
