Digital home security solutions?

Just moved and want to get some better capabilities around monitoring and alerts. Have left the cars unlocked a couple times and have had someone enter them each time (nothing of importance stolen, mouthwash only thing I could identify). Neighbor did have their house burglarized the other day as well.

I called the sheriff and based on that conversation there is effectively nothing you can do except try to deter and have good insurance. You cannot threaten violence unless you are in danger. And if you call the police you’re at the mercy of their response time. Most petty theft and burglary is over too fast and it ranks too low on their radar. So I can’t see any benefit to ADT or someone calling the police for a response to the situation.

Top criteria:
1. notice while home, of entry or exit (small kids)
2. Low total cost of ownership, specifically recurring fees
3. Self service Remote viewing (not 3rd party monitored)

So far, leader of the pack is the Ring platform given its ease of use and low annual cost. I am looking at the base unit with 3-4 sensors, the porch doorbell cam, and (3) of the light motion cameras. I figure I’ll get alerts if I am gone and can call the police on my own.

Looked at Nest but didn’t seem as good for the annual fees. Combined sensors for “open doors” and motion are cool but seem to place the cost too high. Clever in theory but not practical from a cost.

ADT is downright antiquated. $40/mo? No thanks.

Have a friend at alarm.com which also seems ok. But Ring seems better.

Change my mind?

Fear me!
Honestly low-tech stuff is the best security. On NextDoor I read about home burglaries and most of the time it's all about ease of entry.
- Make your place the least likely target among your neighbors
- No glass panels/windows on or near the front door.
- Secure the door to your garage, seriously. Most break-ins happen with weak side entry doors. Sliding glass doors too.
- Cameras and sensors...dunno, it's usually after the fact. Every once in a while I see a neighbor post a pic of some would be robber. Then again another homeowner posts a Ring pic of a robber that does break in. More often though I see posts where homeowners post pics/videos of robbers in their homes stealing their stuff and running off :(.

If you willingly letting Skynet in your house, you're gonna have a bad time.

I've had Bay Alarm for 10 years (I live in Vallejo)
Very happy with their service. No issues. No complaints.

+1 on SimpliSafe. Their cameras actually have physical shutters to alleviate privacy concerns. Also, have PIN numbers for kids so you can see who is home and when

PM if you have any questions and I can give you a referral code

edit: Ring is a solid choice too

I need to look at SS. Consumer reports have it top marks until Ring came back post lawsuit. Now Ring is tops and owned by Amazon. Should stay high quality.

Not worried about the overlords. I’m boring and have nothing to hide.

Coworker who formerly was a supervisor at an alarm company really likes his arlo cams... modular system with audible alarm, probably more likely to deter a thief once inside from the majority of your stuff.

taking a wrong turn
1. Insurance - itemize your valuables.
2. A big dog - German Shepard or such.
3. Vigilant neighbors.
4. Keep landscaping trimmed back so your neighbors can see your house.
4. Leave a radio / tv on when you go out. You can get timers for lamps.
5. High quality door frames and security windows.

Someone I know in West Oakland had his house burgled. They climbed a 6 foot iron fence with barbs on top. They beat his German Shepherd and put it in a closest. The home security monitoring company called OPD. OPD came out while the burglars were in the house but wouldn't climb the fence so they left.

Yeah my neighborhood is quite nice tbh. So no security windows for me. :laughing

But! Nicer areas become targets for bums and petty theft stuff. So at least looking to have the basics for peace of mind and an alert IF something goes down.

If I’m home and they come in, that’s a whole different thread! :laughing or not

I had ADT awhile ago until a lightning strike burned up the main board and I said fuck it and canceled service. Thinking about getting my own mainboard and wiring it up to the existing door sensors and then getting a loud ass siren for outside so my neighbors and everyone around for 3 miles can hear it like an air raid siren.

Then you can add some wireless cams with motion triggers and internet notifications and forgo the whole SKYnet drama with Ring.
