today around 12:30 pm i was going nb on 680 up the hill out of fremont.
there was a chp and critter control. and 100 feet past them was a wounded deer. laying down but alive. looked to be bleeding from the face (internal or facial?).

guess they were going to kill the deer. no do not care about the long legged rat. just hate to see any critter in pain.

but question?

how would they dispatch said deer?
.22 rim fire rifle?
.223 from a M16? (or do the only have ar-15's?),
dart gun with a over dose of something?
other?

i guess the moto back down the hill was getting ready to do a traffic break.

Escaped from CA
Rifle. A .22 LR won't do anything but put the deer in more pain. A .223 or 5.56 will end the deer's life very quickly, especially the dinky ones here on the coast. I dispatched a wounded deer (both hind legs badly broken, animal services declined to respond) with a controlled pair from my rifle to its chest - Hornady TAP .223 ammo. The deer took a deep breath, a shallow one and was dead.

I'm guessing they have to have a pretty good reason to get out the AR15.
I disagree with the idea that a .22 to the brain would not take care of it.
However if critter control was there I would imagine they would have a method which would not require a firearm.

22lr is one of the most used guns to poach animals.

It will easily kill a deer with a shot the the head. Not from 100 yards maybe. But up close definitely.

I dunno, even the pest control in Britain use pistols to euthanize foxes that they capture.

The method used will be the method that requires the least amount of paperwork.

We called the cops on a deer that had been hit by a car back when I was a teenager (this was in Moraga, deer broke it's hind end). The cops showed up and told us to leave when he pulled out a rifle. We heard him shoot it once we were around the corner. Apparently they'll use a rifle.

The old "show 'em the rifle, get 'em out of sight and use the handgun" trick!:afm199

More than likely they just shot it with their pistol.

Doubt it. I'd figure the trusty S&W sidearm, because its easy to clean.

And when the Smith doesn't go bang, you can always beat the deer to death with it since it weighs as much as a boat anchor. :laughing

Amazing how people don't think a 22 will do the job quickly, (palm to face). I've seen footage of LEO using sidearm.

I know this is a motorcycle forum but it's pretty hilarious that some people think a .22lr point blank to the head is not lethal....

CHP carries crappy S&W handguns and keep an AR-15 inside from the last time I got a ride in one :D
