Deer vs Rider at Berryessa last weekend

Slow Goat

Fun Junkie
Posted on Facebook Bay Area Riders Group.... no chance of missing it. Dead deer, broken bike and three broken bones but recovering thankfully.

Had the same thing happen to me last May on Bearcreek (north), just clipped it though but still lost the bike. One killed a buddy in Marin 3yrs ago. Fucking menace they can be!

Looks like the content has been deleted.. hope I never run into one of these bastards. So far the closest call I have had was a dog popping out from a brush obscured driveway in full sprint on Lucas Valley Rd. Front tire came within a foot of it, guessing we both got lucky that day.

The deer are thick out there. Twice now I've had to wait while CHP closed the road for an air evac due to a deer collision.

I’ve never hit one but I’ve had them jump in front of me a few times while driving.
I don’t speed anywhere on a bike in areas where they’re known to be.

I hit and killed one several years ago on San Pablo Dam Rd. I was very fortunate to keep the bike right side up and was completely uninjured.

The deer was literally split in two and the bike was messed up.

I have ridden with a keen look out for them and other unexpected hazards ever since.

It's not my fault...
Closest I've been to hitting one...

Nothing scares me more. I work on my skills all the time, but against Bambi, I got nothin'. I also ride bicycles and I'm pretty sure this is the way I will enter the afterlife. Hit one in the cage one night on Highway 17 and hope I never have that experience on the moto....

I hit one back in 2000 near Hollister hills on Cienega ,totaled my zx9r and beat me up pretty good.
Guy who pulled over to help after checking on me and seeing I wasn’t going to die checked the deer, said it was still alive but bleeding out of its ass and should he shoot him. Me, in considerable pain and trying to realize what happened said I didn’t care just glad I wasn’t bleeding out of mine.:teeth

Had one cross about 30 feet in front of me once and that was way too close. Wouldn't have been that close but she couldn't make up her mind :)

I've dodged so many forest rats I've lost count, it's just part of a mountain road commute, regardless of time of day, though dusk seems to be the worst.

Back when I had a 2006 Yamaha FZ6, I had just left home for work(still dark out), and was all of two minutes into my ride when a small deer ran right into my right side. All I saw was a deer head lined up with my right turn signal stock, then and millisecond later BAM! right into me. It just kind of crumpled and rolled into and off of me. It smacked and cracked the V-shaped fairing piece on the front, broke the signal, smashed into my right foot and shin, then kind of rolled off the rear passenger peg and mount. I just looked straight ahead and rode through it, didn't crash, I figured that was all I could do at that point. I slowly edged over to the side of the lane and gently brought the bike to a stop, as I didn't know at that point what, if any, damage had been done to the bike, and didn't want to drop it after successfully keeping it upright during the hit. Carefully inspected the bike, and resumed my ride to work. Other than the signal and outer fairing bit, the only other damage was it bent the brake pedal outwards few inches. I just bent it back and it was good to go. Had some deer fur stuck on the passenger peg, and my pants leg as well. My shin hurt a bit that day, but was fine the next.

According to the cager that was behind me at that moment, the deer just rolled a ways after the impact(lol), got up and ran off. Too bad, I was hoping it was a goner. I'd like to think a mountain lion got it shortly afterwards.

I've been seeing more and more forest rats in the last few years, but I've also spotted more mountian lions than ever too, so hopefully they get busy and thin out all the damn forest rats.

I try not to ride those roads around Deer o’ clock. Had a close call last year, 7:30am @ Skyline. I felt the deer brush up on me as I swerved around it. It did the weirdest thing, it bolted across the road, stopped and did this side step. I didn’t know which way it was going to go but thank goodness I dodged it.

Yes that's what they do. I saw the one I eventually hit step into the road, jump back, do a little dance then step right back out again. All the while I was trying to figure out where it would eventually go while braking so hard my rear was lofted. In the end I had to get off the brakes just before impact or I would have endo'd myself into oblivion on impact.

I hit one the week before Thanksgiving in 2019. Totally destroyed my R1. The kicker as that a few days before I'd just changed the oil and spark plugs ready for winter riding season.

Unlike birds, deer and squirrels are no good with vectors. That can’t tell where a vehicle is going. Birds can stand on the shoulder and know there’s no need to move cause you’re not pointed in that direction.

Last year a deer ran up a slope and jumped the concrete barrier landing in front of me before I knew what was happening. Lucky I was going slow and driving an F250, was just a near miss.
