Anyone else getting excited? Our party put in for X12, X9A, and D6.

Got skunked last year, but I'm always optimistic. This will be my first year without my Tacoma. That thing was so perfect for getting deep into the woods. I have a Tahoe now. Hope it's not too big, and I hope I wont miss the bed too much.

Totally thought this was a how many deer have you hit thread.

Good luck on the deer hunting. I know it used to drive me crazy how nonchalant the deer were when I was riding in California. If you see a deer here in Louisiana they are running for the hills when they see you.

The placed I would most like to hunt would be Missouri. The amount of deer there is ridiculous. I saw so many deer everywhere even I saw herds in empty lots between houses it was crazy they were like fleas.

A little too early to get excited? But then again I am more of an A and B zone hunter. I just bought a kick ass 270 WSM, model 70 Extreme Weather SS that does not have a kill on it, yet. I am SUPER excited to take a blacktail with it. A little big for blacktail? Maybe... but it will definitely kill it.

Sharxfan, you are looking at the 'local' blacktails, maybe. When it comes time to get your buck, blacktail deer are the most skiddish/reclusive deer that you will encounter. They seem to know exactly when the season is.

I think today is the draw deadline, so it gives me something to be excited for.

The deer in towns and protected areas DGAF. Out in the woods, they are a different beast.

I use an old .270. It's a sporterized Mauser based on the pre-64 M70. Although, I guess I should say I carry it, since I haven "used" it yet. Hopefully this year.

No bow hunters? I stuck a nice 22" black tail Saturday at 19:30 at about 40-45 yards. He ran maybe 75 yards and cashed out.

I amnot sure how a 10x fixed would do in Cali but I opted for a good 2-9x for La as the shots range from close to far. It seems like with 10x you would be stuck if one happened to come in close.

So take this with a grain of salt as this is for the swamps and pipelines of La but hopefully I will be hunting mountains in a few years if we move as planned.:teeth

Where has any season opened?

I use a 10x fixed scope. No problems either at 200 or 20 yards. Your setup should be gtg, Pete.

I had 6x lower end variable power scope and I couldn't see anything closer than 40 yds I was not able to focus and see anything. Is it different with a fixed power versus a variable? I am curious.

What zone are you going to hunt, Pete?

No idea. Never gone deer hunting before. But I loved the deer jerkey guys were getting mailed from home when we were deployed. Got a buddy up in Washington who uses his bow for deer. Might go up there and hunt with him I dunno. We gotta hang out soon haven't seen you since you moved dude.

Next weekend is the opener!

Not sure what to expect. Last year was a madhouse on opening day in our zone, and this year they sold 67% MORE tags (6k up to 10k).

I just want some meats. I have the whole week after opening day off, I think it'll be about two full weeks off tota, so hopefully the weekdays will be more sane.
