South America filled a big gap will smiles and fanfare. :thumbup
Not sure what to expect in the new venue.

Looking forward to it.

I’m expecting we’ll see way more high-output-450cc-factory-single-cylinder engine failures than in 2019 ... :toothless

supposed to be five-year contract to race in what’s looking like miles and miles of traditional African open-desert, high-speed, deep sand tracks that maybe will lead to a rule change allowing twin-cylinder factory racebikes again ... :ride

3170 miles of racing (5097 km of ss, 2759km of liaison) ...

Lawrence of Arabia left Al Wajh on May 9, 1917, and captured Aqaba on July 6, 1917, after crossing 600 miles of desert ...

looks like stages on 01/07/2020 - 01/09/2020 will cover some of the same terrain (Neom is basically on the Gulf of Aqaba/Red Sea) ...

The stunning Saudi region near Al-Ula is about to throw open its doors to the world

Sastanàqqàm (English translation)
Question for You

Ténéré *, can you tell me
of anything better
Than to have your friends
and your mount,
To find your way
by the light
Of the four bright stars
of heaven,
To know how
to find water in
The unlikeliest of places,
And enlist the momentum
of the wind
To help you move forward?

Tell me, Ténéré,
how you and I
Can remain united,
with no hate for each other?

Ténéré, I can now admit that
I have travelled far through this wide world.

Ténéré, I give you my oath
That as long as I’m alive,
I will always come back to you.

* Ténéré means desert in Tuareg

Dakar 2020 arriving in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on 12/22/19 ...

guessing the media vehicles/organisation vehicles they'll find as many as they need in Saudi Arabia?

think this is new this year:

“Dakar Experience” ranking

In order to allow the less experienced riders to continue their learning process if anyone is forced to retire, except for medical reasons, they will be allowed to resume the race by joining the “Dakar Experience” ranking, awarding the unlucky amateurs to keep learning and gaining further experience to complete the rally in the future.

This second chance will be awarded to every competitor in every class except for the ones included on the Elite List.

part of the reason finishing a Dakar was awesome is because they didn't let you finish ... :toothless

True... but I see it as a good thing for the racers and their sponsors.

Need both to keep the ship afloat! :p

agree, it's creeping professionalism ...

one reason this thread is here in the "Adventure Riding" forum is the history of the Dakar of regular folks being able to enter the race and chase the dream in Africa ... try that with a NASCAR or Indy car race.

as you say, times change ... novice championships for everyone! :laughing:angel

be fun to see either Yamaha or Honda deny KTM a 21st-in-a-row Dakar title. :ride

Mr Hawker, entered into solo Malle Moto class for 2020, tells us it costs $60K to race, and he's making $30K a year ... :cool

his second-hand 2020 Husky 450 Factory Rally at 4:57, followed by description of the Malle Moto/Originals class.

The second chance thing is cool.... at least they're giving riders a chance to keep riding after spending all that money. I think it will attract more people. Who wants to spend 100k to get knocked out on a mechanical on the second day? So what if you cant win? Fix it and keep riding! Hell yeah!

I'm interested to see how, or if the change in terrain will affect the finish. Both for the riders and the bikes.

Honda needs a good showing this year...

Toby Price set to lead the KTM Dakar Rally defence.

KTM has a solid team. I would bet on them repeating the win myself.
A three KTM podim again.. Hoping not. I am hoping to see a Husky and a Honda on it.. and in a perfect world the KTM would be third. :teeth

:thumbup

love rooting for Yamaha every year, myself:

Honda should be due for some better luck, finally ... :laughing:angel
