Cycle World print edition ends as Octane buys Bonnier digital assets

It's sad to see Cycle World go, but I honestly can't say I'm surprised. I haven't been subscribed to their print editions for a while now, and the online presence of Cycle World and Motorcyclist has been far outclassed by content creators like Revzilla's Common Tread, 44Teeth, etc. Hopefully Octane is able to keep the Cycle World name alive in the digital era.

I noticed that as well! Interesting concept; I think CSC is already doing online ordering, although I've never personally seen one so I don't know what volume they're moving. I think the dealer model will stick around for a long while, but who knows, maybe Octane is ahead of the curve and will bring Cycle World and Motorcyclist along with it.

They'll probably sub another mag in there. I was getting "4X4 Truck Nut" or something like that after one of the other mags folded. :dunno

Sad, but a sign of the times. When it went to 4 issues a year I let my subscription from 1965 run out. Anyone else old enough to yearly Cycle World shows in LA. Enjoyed them as a teenager.

Well, it's an optimistic report from a long time survivor in the MC publishing business. He addresses some valid points and I think has made a good case for the change. I hope it works out as planned.

Cycle Magazine was definitely better than Cycle World. At least they moved Kevin Cameron over. I had to subscribe to Dirt Rider to get Ed Hertfelder.

I'm bummed about this for purely sentimental reasons.
For one thing, I have had a few interactions with Mark Hoyer over the years and he was always a friendly, articulate and entertaining pleasure to talk with. There is also Peter Egan who retains his status of a God to me. I already miss the days of plucking the new edition from my mailbox and almost immediately flipping through the magazine in a very deliberate zig-zag order beginning with Mr. Egan's column followed by Kevin Cameron, then lurching toward the back of the issue for the garage letters before finally landing on a bike comparison in the middle of the publication.
Sadly, I've already gotten used to that void in my routine as "progress" has essentially removed that media option from my daily menu. It began happening years ago and we all have our stories about when we began to notice it. The same "progress" took newspapers from me in much the same way although some remain clinging to a rather futile form of legacy killing life support. I hope I go quickly when it's my turn to expire. Dragging out the inevitable just tortures those left behind.
Speaking of progress vs extinction .....am I the only one amused by the irony of the name Octane being used here? The name Electron seems so much more appropriate as the ICE is going the same way as print media......directly behind the Dodo bird.

What do you guys think of RoadRUNNER? My parents got a subscription with some expiring airline miles (or something, I forget the details, not important) and I was pretty impressed. It's on a really high quality paper and I really enjoyed the ride reports they published.

Yes. I think many of us feel this way.

Great description of zig zagging thru CW. I'd start with Egan as well, but saved Kevin Cameron for last because I'd usually have to read his words several times over before understanding. To say he sure knows more about internal combustion engines than I do is a vast understatement.

To me the loss of Peter Egan, Kevin Cameron, Ed Hertfelder, Mark Hoyer and several others are like losing contact with old friends who have moved and perhaps gone other directions in life. This in spite of never having met any of them.

I try to have all my magazines digitally when possible. Sad thing is some of those are now out of business.

Sounds like they bought the asset portfolio and not the entity itself...and I'm pretty sure the selling entity (Bonnier) won't be paying anything out neither...
