Curious: Do electric motorcycles give off less heat?

I was curious about whether electric motorcycles cooler to run in the summer.

Do they give off less heat?

absolutely they do, that's why they are so much more efficient than combustion engines...

converting battery power into rotational energy results in much less waste in the form of heat as compared to the combustion engine :) :ride

Electric drivetrains operate at more than 80% efficiency, typical ICE drivetrains maybe 30%. So for a given power requirement, the ICE will be wasting close to 10x the energy as an electric - and most of that is heat.

Another way to think about it is how hot stuff gets - I would be very surprised if any components in an electric drivetrain get much above 120,130C, something like that. How hot do exhaust headers get? Hundreds of C, maybe close to a thousand? That difference in temperature is what's needed to dissapate the 10x greater energy waste.

Squid.
IIRC, the Brammo's radiator never got much over 150 degrees or so, and that was the hottest part of the bike.

My Energica definitely runs cooler than any ICE bike I’ve ever owned. During last summer’s daily commute it was noticeably cooler while lane splitting than any of my gas bikes, although when ambient temps are 100+ the point is probably moot.

On a related note, I was impressed with how well the Energica battery did in the summer during my daily commute. It took about 30 minutes in 90+ degree commuting to get it to go yellow on the dash and it never went red, even after an hour or so total on 100+ degree days.

Yes they run much cooler than an ICE bike. Which is why I like the electric in the summer and ICE in the winter :p

No significant heat. I can do a commute on the Brammo Empulse and put my hand on the motor cover which is nice and warm. Do not try this on an ICE! In all fairness, the Empulse's motor is water cooled.

An ICE needs cooling to keep the oil from frying to keep the metal parts from seizing. Water cooling in an electric motor keeps the wiring happy.

They do get hot when you push them hard though, I heard the Zeroes will overheat quickly and cut power.

The Empulse will cut off regen when the battery temp get's to around 128F.

It won't charge the battery in cold weather also o_O'

Repeated hillclimbs with not much wind can overheat the components also. My light bee's controller overheated after this climb.

Electric don't like extreme temps that's for sure, not too hot and not too cold.

There’s no way these will run in India then!

It would be dependent on what is cooler the ambient air or the potting. Heat always moves from hot to cold. +80F day and a fresh cold battery from garage....

How is the battery cold, if it was full of the heat from the last time you rode it?

If India has extreme temps then probably not. I think what you have to worry most about is the battery. It doesn't like to be too hot or cold as you can see in the pictures. I went camping with my Light Bee in the Sierrras and it was like 40F and the BMS wouldn't let me charge the battery because it was so cold. I had to start my van up and warm the battery up with the heater until I could charge it.

For casual riding I think electrics are fine when it's hot. When it's cold you will get reduced range.
