Cripples, Paralize? (450'ish question)

So I just heard about the whole cripple thing, killing off a cylinder to race 450 and thought it sounds awesome. But has anyone tried to turn one into a twin?

Mostly curious, I can't even afford to fix my RS85 right now, so no chance of neutering a 600.

We did have someone test the disabling of a cylinder on a 675 Triumph and the HP loss was too much. You also would need to worry about too much imbalance in the crank. We are already worried about the imbalance with one cylinder off, with two off....

Think about all the dead weight you are pushing around. That weight, compression, etc. costs horsepower. I could imagine seeing a 66% loss in horsepower or more.

Reminds me of that company that used to grind camshaft to make you inline four fire as a twin. Broken crankshaft due to imbalance put them out of business.

Just curious about it. The whole idea of killing the cylinder to run 450 sounded like a cool out of the box thinking thing. Just wondering if anyone had gone farther with the idea.

info on the build stuff that's being done can be found at www.450triple.com

On killing one of 4 cyls, there was imbalance concerns if a person opted to remove the piston/ rod, but not so much if they are left in, which all of us are doing.

Nobody that I know of has tried to convert to a twin, The detrimental effects of which, as far as imbalance goes, may be subject to displacement (ie: gsxr 1k --> 500 twin).

As Marcus mentioned, on the triumph triple, the loss was huge dropping one cylinder compared to dropping one in a 4 cyl engine

I'm the one that did the 675 cylinder disable. It was a temporary test, (no cam grinding or valve removal, just disabled the injector) but it was a almost a 50% loss of power removing 33% of the displacement. Went from 96 whp to 50 whp.

What did you expect out of 450cc?
That is more than stock Honda CBR500 makes.

I didn't expect much more to be honest, but I was HOPING to see closer to 60!

My expert riding is worth at least 20 whp, but not quite 30... :twofinger
