Converting to Sumo VS Just getting a street oriented sumo bike?

hey barf, Its gator with another stupid question to ask all you experienced moto lovers out there

i really want a more street oriented motorcycle. thats about it. ever since i got my klx about a year ago, i knew that i wanted something a little more fit for getting to work. knobbies just dont give me the confidence on the road, especially being a newer rider. Ive been riding for about a year now, my commute to work i about 3 miles one way, but i do find myself going on excursions around the city i live in after i get off just to have some fun. i have little highway experience.

For the past couple of months ive been toying with the idea of converting my plated '94 KLX300r into a more street oriented motorcycle, or rather being able to perform a transformation into a bike that can be swapped over from a dirt oriented set up for Hollister, dual sports tire for adventure time, and then a strictly street tire for general commuting around town. but i have no clue if its even possible. already have a set of wheel mx wheels ready to get laced, then i gotta buy hubs, plus the ones already on my bike

now im pretty sure the klx300 (really have a 250 with an oem 300 head and piston, all done within a year of it being purchased in 94, along with a bunch of other farkels) went unchanged in all its years in production, except for a frame material swap in the early 2000's, i think? but im pretty sure its all the same. so i need help with that bit. wonder if i can just buy the klx/SF parts and slap them on

my plan was to completely tear her down (never done that before) and resto mod her. powder coat the frame to the more modern silver, maybe a top end rebuild (331 kit anyone?), new lights and accessories. maybe get a new rear shock, and upgrade to some KX forks and get them valved?

i dont know if this is above my limit both financially and work wise, although i know id have to start somewhere. how much am i looking at financially to make this happen in the long run? i going to try and get everything second hand off of ebay or craigslist before going new. but i havent been able to find a solid parts list to convert this bike over since most people just buy the KLX250sf.

now i dont know if i could ever have he courage to sell my KLX. its such a rare and different bike that i know cant be plated ever again. but would it in this case just be a bbetter idea to just buy something else instead of spending time on this project. in know maintenance is cheap on this bike. insurance is a whopping 8 bucks a month for full coverage with my agency.

if theres anyone willing to guide me and mentor me with just some basic information or articles to read please let me know. i just want to get started before i waste too much time!

Hey Jacare,
Can't help you with the transformation question.
However, i do own a KLX 250 SF. It's a great commuter and a lot of fun , but there are better ones out there too. Good luck!

im just wondering if it wld be cost effective to be able to do this conversion. hopefully i can buy some sf parts and slap them on real quick. probably change sprockets and stuff to get it going. but is t worth the time and money to do it to a 20 year old bike?

I paid $2700 for a pristine 2009 with 2k miles on it.
My feeling is that New tires and sprockets are easy conversions. At least start there and see how it feels. Test before proceeding to bigger changes in case you change your mind.

I think I may end up doing it. Wanna figure out the KX fork swap too. And a place that does suspension. I'm guessing evolution suspension may be the place. Maybe I'll buy an sv650 for the mean while.

Some of the best suspension guys in the business are at Laguna trackdays. If you take it over there during a trackday they'll do it for $20-$40.

I also know of a red 2004 SV650 in pristine shape with 4000 miles on it for $3500. Only problem is it has an AZ reg. I think its down in san jose right now.

On that bike I would recommend tuning the existing suspension and buying some 80/20 tires and call it good. In my opinion the KX fork conversion will be expensive and time consuming and improve off road performance only. I had a KDX that likely had the same forks you have, and gold valves and proper spring weight and tuning, they worked very well.
If you want street handling to improve, get some street biased dual sport tires. I went through the hassle and expense of doing an SM conversion to a DRZ and while I loved it, I realized that I could have gotten 90% there with a set of tires.
But that's just my opinion.

Have you toyed with the idea of swapping out the knobby dirt tires for some more street oriented dual-sport tires?

This option will only set you back $120.

I would suggest trying this approach as an interim step before you drop big bux on a bigger conversion.
