anyone ever open up one of the newer style "Ohlins 2.1" knockoffs?

I have friends who have had good luck with the Scotts knockoffs.

I know, quality won't be the same as the $700 original. I'd be tempted to open it up and look for anything obviously wrong - burrs etc. Of course, I wouldn't be able to tell if tolerances are wrong, or it isn't hardened, or so on.

http://www.propilotsuspension.com/w...l-SD2.1-Vacume-Machine-Required-SM_SDMX21.pdf there's even a manual available so I could see if it's the same design or just looks the same

Thanks. I've seen teardowns of the knockoffs of a typical Scotts, but not the slim Ohlins 2.1

I bought one of the hyperpro knockoffs and it looked great, moved smoothly, quality of all the parts was superb. But once installed it gave different damping in each direction. Something to look out for as well.

I bought a scotts damper knockoff a while ago for the DR650 but never installed it looks very much like the real deal =/ havent installed I need the hardware for the DR and need to weld that pin to the frame =/

the fact that this includes all the hardware required (or at least claims it does) is one of the reasons I've considered it

Yeah seems like a great a deal steering damper stuff is so expensive. I don't think I'll ever install it though I bought it to make riding through sand easier but I been accustomed to the crappy sand handling of the DR650 haha. There was something weird about the dampening on mine I think for offroad I think it has no dampening in the center or something I forget.

Here's the one I bought it by Savage so bling bling it does have the hardware don't know if it works on the DR though. I heard the scotts stuff will work with this though so maybe I'll just buy the kit from scotts.

Too much lean angle...

Did you remove it, or did it provide enough of a benefit to warrant keeping?

for dirt, Scotts dampers are generally set up so that return to center is undamped: it resists going from straight to turned, but then easily returns to center

I think that's the "something weird" that you speak of

GPR all the way......Much better value

They leak and need to be rebuilt often because of what I consider to be a design flaw. And if u don’t rebuild it after it leaks, there’s a dead spot w no damping which defeats the purpose. So I don’t think they are a great value.

A used linear Ohlins is the best value IMO

V4. I found that a hot sunny trackday is a good way to get them to leak. I loved their customer service which included a lot of free rebuilds. But it was crappy to have to carry a spare to the races.

I like Honda’s new design on the CRF, a rly short linear damper mounted to the headstock and the lower triple. Quick searches suggest people are making custom brackets to fit other bikes.
