Chest protector?

So yeah, I recently got Priused. 4 broken ribs, bruised lung etc. I was wearing Olympia mesh jacket and pants, kevlar gloves, boots, helmet etc.

Is there a chest/back protector out there that may have saved the ribs? I'm a gear guy ATGATT type butt not the highest dollar gear. The Olympia helped, I only have a 2 sq inch raspberry on left knee and even smaller on right elbow where armor shifted. For the future what can I wear for chest/rib protection? Keep in mind I'm a BMF (315 lb) so recommendations have to be for big boys :teeth

Not highest dollar gear? What did the broken ribs cost?
Ever hear of a chest impact, stopping a heart? Those reports are coming in as well.

Rib armor is the most underrated gear protection out there. All it takes is one broken rib through a vital organ to end a life. Hypocritcally speaking, I don't wear one.

These are the only ones I've seen:
Troy Lee Armored Vest $95

Chest protectors are one of those things that make a lot of sense given the frequency of impact on the sternum and how important heart and lungs are to living. They are also the one piece of protective gear least worn.

I have to admit that Troy Lee Armored Vest tickled my inner kid that want's to be Batman. Or maybe that is my inner squid?:teeth

I've been looking at doing some sort of chest protector myself, and was looking at the chest-only version:

But that chest + rib protector looks even better - though some photos show people wearing it around the back and some wearing it around the front? Not sure how it's intended to be worn.

Exactly, it's intended for either way, that's why forcefield has multiple pics of it worn front and back.

I don't know why more companies don't make armor with both chest and ribs.

Lou, I wear full gear all the time just not always the most expensive out there :twofinger. I always thought Olympia to be decent road gear butt have a friend that slid a bit a said he got lots of road rash and said no more Olympia for him. Make sense?

Something I would suggest is replacing the armor in the jacket and pants. A lot of damage is done not from actually hitting that spot but the force from the impact just "rattles" things. If you get some forcefield inserts it will reduce the impact force by a lot and that will reduce overall injury.

After a crash on track that broke ribs, snapped sternum and later the ER found bleeding around my aorta (which created some excitement) I now always wear a chest protector (before I only used a back protector).
After checking reviews and getting advice I got the Knox Aegis back protector and the Knox chest/ribs protector that goes with it. They fit well under a suit too.
The Forcefield ones have great safety ratings also. Definitely a learning experience; hope your injuries heal fast !

Above all I like to play.
Hmm. Hadn't really thought about this before. Now I want protection built into my jacket.

A motocross chest protector is reasonably inexpensive. I have one, but pretty much never bother putting it on. Protects your shoulders too.

My understanding is that these things are really only designed to protect your from roost since they're a hard shell which does little to absorb and dissipate impact energy.

These days, I wear a Forcefield Chest Protector, every time I ride out of the end of my drive.

Peachy!
I have both the Hit-Air vest and the Forcefield Adventure harness, which includes chest/rib protection. I typically use the Hit-Air for street riding and the harness for off-road/adventure-travel. These were added after a rib-breaking, lung -collapsing, liver-mushing incident-I was lucky to survive that and I'm hoping these extra items of gear will protect my important bits should my luck ever run out.

I don't know why the back part or the shoulder parts would be needed then, if roost protection was the only function.

At a minimum, it would help protect from falling off on rocky ground, which is fairly likely when riding in the dirt around here. (Sorry that isn't a good street example.)

I use this one. It has both chest and spine protector.

Everyone ignored this part of the request. I have the same question; none of the pictured will will work on someone who's -very- BIG, with a big belly. Think old guy w/a big gut.

I'm in the same boat; my leathers don't fit anymore after 10-15lbs. gained weight <mostly in belly.> So I've been looking too. About the only thing I've seen is either the Hit-Air vest or perhaps an Aerostich.

Can anyone name/show something for the big belly types here? Now be nice you bums! :laughing
