A Chandler police officer was killed in a motorcycle wreck Friday morning, marking the second time in a week that the agency has lost an officer in a motorcycle collision.

Police said Officer David Payne, 37, was sitting on his police motorcycle at a red light at about 12:40 a.m. Friday when a car rear-ended him at the intersection of Chandler Boulevard and Pennington Drive.

Payne was taken to a hospital where he died less than an hour later.

Police arrested Tempe resident Brian Yazzie, 31, on suspicion of manslaughter and hit-and-run for his role in the collision, said Sgt. Joe Favazzo, a Chandler police spokesman.

Yazzie was driving a black sedan and had an 11-month-old child inside the car at the time of the collision, Favazzo said.

Investigators believe alcohol was a factor in the wreck, and Yazzie was driving on a license that was suspended in 2010, according to Chandler police.

"Unfortunately we had a DUI driver, driving on a suspended license who rear-ended our officer and took his life last night," said Chandler Police Detective Seth Tyler.

Payne was a seven-year veteran with Chandler police and began his career as a detention officer before moving on to patrol and finally serving as a motorcycle officer, Favazzo said. Payne, a certified drug-recognition expert who served as a trainer for other officers, is survived by one child, Favazzo said.

The wreck forced police to close the intersection of Chandler Boulevard and Pennington Drive.

Police said the closure on Chandler Boulevard extended from Dobson Road to Arrowhead Drive, and investigators expected the area to remain closed through the morning rush hour.

Chandler police officer Bryant Holmes, 34, was killed Tuesday as he drove his motorcycle to work. Police said a 20-year-old driver ran a red light and hit Holmes at a Gilbert intersection.

I hate these.

Sitting on his motorcycle after midnight? Seems odd. I rarely see leo motos out at that hour.

I wish they would put the perp on a chair in the middle of an intersection and run him over with his own car, just so he could know what it was like for the officer.

Still beyond saddened by the PD losses of last week in Sac and Placerville and now these brave men:(. Losing our best and bravest to the worst of us is truly testing my faith in humanity.
