Census - privacy? (non political)

So, why should anyone concerned about privacy and staying as off the radar as possible fill out the census forms that just arrived in the mail?

Yeah, alleged fed money to your region yadda yadda, but beyond that, and the threat of fines :rolleyes

Why bother?

I don't recall ever filling one out in my 50+ years before. Fuck it.

Probably a hair better to send in a heavily redacted version than no version. They may hassle you for nothing, but they simply don't have the time to go after people that don't fill it out right.

...why... Isn't the census anonymous?
Heck yeah a lot of people would ignore it :rolleyes

Mid January, I had an experience with a Census Bureau interviewer collecting data for the National Center for Health Statistics, who visited my home address twice. Once when I was not at home and once on my doorsteps while I was coming back home.

They are persistent and don't get discouraged when you first say No, not interested. For this survey, they don't leave you with a paper form to fill out at your own convenience. They have a laptop that takes your answers and the data gets stored in the cloud. I asked him, what kind of health questions would you be asking me? He hesitated, but volunteered something like, Do you have diabetes and do the people in your household have diabetes. He thought I would be swayed by a gift card (red flag) for my troubles.

As they say, data is the new currency. Don't give your privacy away. You may be told the purpose of the survey but you don't know who will get their hands on your data and use it to their advantage.

Not interested in the paranoia, very interested to be counted.. Services out her in Yolo County depend on our data.

I figure it goes to the highest bidder, over and over, until all bidders have paid... And then it goes to the dark web databases.

Stop spreading fear. Census data is not shared and it is your duty as a resident or citizen to take part.

I am not trying to spread fear.

I am sharing my experience and my point of view. That is what threads are all about, aren't they?

I felt that the census guy was too insistent and he had a lot of free time to visit the place I call home. I was concerned about him knowing about me and my household. The survey was for the CDC, not the basic headcount

You are literally warning people not to share the info lest it be sold...you are attempting to spread the fear you feel, to others so that they may be vigilant.

You are spreading fear. Please let me reassure you that the census taker was doing their job. A job mandated by the US constitution. Please rest assured that the data you provided was secure and will not be shared. I know in the age of paranoia and data breaches that is difficult but lets all try and be brave and do the patriotic thing. Reply to the census.

I work for the census and I make a backup of all of my data. I then go back to everyone that says they have diabetes and replace their flour with sugar.

DON"T DO IT. THE CENSUS WILL STEAL YOUR CHILDRUN!!!111!!!!!

I believe that her paranoia is indicative of her state of mind. She has trust issues.
Don't we all!

I don't assume that the audience are innocent children who do what they are asked

Funny how my response is isolated and focused on ...

I don't think that it is funny.
I believe that you are a very good debater and capable of discussing issues.

Don't worry, I'll happily berate anyone else who spreads fear about the census. :teeth You were the first to do so and its early on in the thread so you are getting the brunt of it. It's not personal. I would want to look at some credentials from a census worker too before I let them in my home. Fair enough. As far as children are concerned, yeah they need to be counted too. :thumbup

One time the census taker came to my house and asked me some very invasive questions. "Where were you on the night on November 16?" "Do you own any guns?" "Do you know Ann Smith and if so, what is your relationship?"

I slammed the door in his face, but this guy was persistent. He ended coming back with some sort of paperwork that said I had to let them in. They turned my goddam house over and trashed it. I can only assume they were looking to find out if I was hiding my diabetic medicine. They stole my gun.

But the joke is on them, I kept my insulin in my car. Screw the census, they'll never find out I have diabetes. I will never tell them.

Hell they currently have me locked in a cage and keep asking me about this Ann lady. Is that some sort of slang for diabetus?

I'd like to see in official writing where answering these kinds of questions is my constitutional duty.

And I am concerned about data breach and do not believe it can be stopped.

But if it was a facebook poll, you'd be all over it wouldn't you?
