cell phone drivers

What will it take to get people to stop using their phones while driving? I don't think technology is the answer, but what about a $1000 fine? I lived in Germany for 16 months and rarely saw Germans using their phones. Did see Americans using them (different license plate). I think during those 16 months I may have seen 5 or 6 accidents on the side of the road. Since I've been back, less than two months now, I've seen at least an accident every other day. Can't stand people who drive with their heads down because texting is more important than watching where you're going and what is happening around you.

What will it take to get people to pay attention?

There's an app for that.

I read somewhere that distracted driving is causing four times as many deaths than DUI.

Nothing will. That's just how things are now, until cars drive themselves.

I had thought of it this way. Its easier to remove the car from the person than the phone from the person. :laughing

I made the 'whoooiirrp' sound at a lady today...she dropped her phone and then gave me a dirty look. she slowed waaaaaay up when we got the green and kept her lane and about half a block behind me:laughing she was wearing a safety vest and what looked like a muni uniform shirt:|

I wish cell jammers were legal. I may just get an air horn. :|

Perhaps eventually there will be a way for the phone to know when it's in a running car and disallow use. My phone and my radio have recently developed a relationship that does this...when I receive text messages it automatically sends an "I'm driving right now" text back to the sender.

But without resorting to technology to block it, why not just make it socially unacceptable or so damn expensive people won't? It works in other places. Or are we Americans too wrapped up in ourselves and our toys that we're just unwilling to stop? No matter the consequences.

Israel recently implemented law that throws you in jail for 90 days as well as impounding your car for that time frame and issuing a nice few hundred dollar fine.

People still call/text. Shit, I even saw many people riding vespas with their phone sitting in their helmet on their ear as they chat away. Weird stuff

I got a hard stare from a LEO yesterday when I was pulling out of Taco Bell. Does holding-up a half-eaten crunch wrap supreme constitute distracted driving?

Always charming when people state the obvious or battle windmills.

Anecdotal, but learned to drive well before cell phones were ubiquitous, and adopted the tech and still drive safely making calls. Driving to work was when I'd talk to my parents or old friends. Never an accident or close call. My dad had a car phone since the early nineties. He never had an accident, and he drives about 80k miles per year for work, and was always getting/making calls.

I use earphones/mic now because I don't want a ticket, but it's annoying. I hate that we can't have nice or simple things. The real problem is people don't take driving seriously, and phones provide too tantalizing a distraction.

Anybody else have one if these and survive without incident?
