Car warranty question

Problem: XC90 has broken plastic button on shifter which causes the car to get stuck either in or out of gear (flaky broken plastic f-ing piece). Part cost, $45 and I can fix it BUT there is also an issue with the sunroof (YAY!!!!!!!!!!) so wife wants to take it in to a stealer and have all repaired under our awesome warranty. This is where I get pissed.
deductable = $100, $55 more than the part, but hey, the sunroof's getting fixed. Well she takes it in and signs a paper which says it will cost $250 for a diagnosis if the repairs are not covered... WHAT????? Of course the sunroof repair is not covered (or fully covered, haven't had a chance to raise any hell yet, something about the clip and alignment are not covered but some parts are???) and the shifter is covered. We now have a choice of paying $250 and the sunroof won't be fixed or $571 for them to fix it.

I will be making calls to the warranty company, the dealer (Marin Volvo) and McKevvit, where I bought the car (and warranty, through Nissan/Allstate apparently) to find out what's going on and trying to see if there is a way I can "fix" this.

Any advice on how to deal with this situation would be helpful. Any funny comments on how lame I am for not handling this correctly might cheer me up a bit...

Extended warranty only covers certain systems on the car depending upon the type plan you bought when you purchased it. This part of the deal is handled through the finance dept; not the dealership sales dept.

You most likely got powertrain coverage which is not going to cover that little plastic thingy. Though if it is causing shifting problems as you stated, you could argue that point under powertrain coverage.

Read your extended insurance papers, it will tell you what's cover and what's not.

Now that I've take the time to explain some things to you, what year is the car and how many miles on it :confused

Re-read your post: Charges to diagnose are the norm because if it is not warranty covered, then there's inspection charges warranty will not pay. And who's going to pay the tech the time to check it out? He's gotta family to feed too you know............

Thanks for the reply,

2005 xc90 with about 70k. The shifter button is covered, just got stuck with the sunroof issue.

I will be going over the paperwork and calling the warranty company. When we purchased the car I asked many specific questions about what would and wouldn't be covered and I guess I got suckered. I was led to believe (I know, I know) that anything that is not a wear and tear item (as they stated) would be covered. So I guess barely using the sunroof and it breaking is wear and tear... shit

If you've got one item covered under warranty, the shifter, the diagnostic fee should be waived. So theoretically, you'll only pay the 100 deductible and cost of parts not covered. It's odd they're telling you some sunroof stuff is covered and other's not. THAT sounds like BS to me. It's either covered or not. (Unless there's signs of cosmetic damage not relative to the repairs.)

Dude. You're lucky the shifter's covered! :laughing

6 year old car and 70K, get over it. :|

I never buy extended warranty coverage. If that mofo's gonna break down, I'm gonna make sure it happens inside of the Factory warranty period! :teeth

Not upset about the button. I could have easily fixed it. We bought the car used a year and a half ago and payed for what I thought was a bumper to bumper warranty for 4 years or 100k miles.

To this point I have not gotten involved of talked to anyone. I am going to attempt to pick up the pieces today.

Perhaps I should have put it this way...

Anyone have an idea how to weasel out of this?

Rolls with it...
Who's the warranty company? Certified "Pre-Owned" or whatever through VNA?

(But most warranty companies really only cover mechanical parts, engine, trans, drivetrain, especially on used cars.)

Send the wife back to pick it up with some sob story. Might work. :dunno

So funny you said that. I'm quite bummed how this is going down because my honey didn't handle this like we discussed. She's a sweetheart, but a pushover. I told her last night some tears could get us out of this.

at least the rental car is covered, Kia Rondo FTL!!!!!!!

Don't have the paperwork here but the company was something like Quality Guarantee (???). I believe it was a CPO

If it was a Volvo offered program you may have more of a chance of them stepping up to cover the sunroof, especially if it was through a "Certified" program... but give them a call, I've seen some of these warranty companies step up and take care of things on a "good will" basis before. Won't hurt to ask, or to express your disappointment, elevated to anger and indignation! :thumbup

I fucking hate dealing with extended warranties...or service contract in dealer-ease. We have to check part by part to see what's covered with an extended warranty. Authorization for diagnosis up front is standard fare when writing up a customer with an extended warranty. Covers our ass and makes sure that one way or another, we're getting paid for our time.

CPO warranty is different. Exactly like the basic bumper to bumper that the car started with...just extended. Not a contract.

Those extended warranty companies are notoriously difficult to deal with. One of our own (FlewByU) just ripped one a new a$$ in small claims court for "uncovered" warranty issues.

Everyone I spoke to was really nice and considerate. My stealer sold me a crappy warranty and that is my fault. The nice guy at Marin Volvo said they would just fix the knob if I wanted (just the $100 deductable) , I opted to get the sunroof fixed too because the amount quoted was wrong, the total is about 200 less than originally stated. This was my first purchase of a used car off a lot and a warranty as well. Lessons were learned. Thanks for taking the time to read and offer input.

Dogging the Rondo is making me feel a little better.

Yes he is a lawyer, but certainly a well informed consumer with some smarts could potentially make a case in small claims court. I will give you that it makes it a bit easier when you are acquainted with the rules and have a good understanding of how to make a case.

Lest us not forget, FlewByU, in addition to being a good lawyer is a stubborn bastard.

I love a good fight, but with 3 kids, work 6 days a week (50 miles from home 5am - 3pmish), wife who works nights while I watch the kids, I chose to bend over and take it this time.

For a couple of hundred, I'd probably do the same. Depends on how pissed I was.
