Canine osteosarcoma

The great Owen, my wingdog of 12+ years, suddenly went lame, left rear. Was expecting arthritis but there are ugly dark spots on the film.

Surgical biopsy on Wednesday. Praying for a clear chest X-ray but statistically unlikely. Would happily elect for a painfree three legged dog for one more year.

Damn.

Thanks all. So the meds seem to be working. Obviously no effect on pathology but less distress. Eating and pooping have resumed. So have heavy sighs and stretching. He actually just jumped on the bed. Maybe more of a climb but I'll take it!

Heavy duty life or end of life decision points on the near horizon. One grand medical gesture is a possibility in a best case scenario. I won't allow my attachment to prolong any suffering.

Don't exactly know why I'm posting this on teh barf. Just need to talk to someone I suppose. Thanks for listening.

You came here because through all the BS and bickering that is BARF, at its basis are a group of people that genuinely care about one another. Best of luck on your upcoming decisions.

Hey Sam, I went through this with our Rottie. Long story not for now, but bone cancer in canines often stops at the joint. Ours was given a good prognosis for lower (front) leg removal. Always remember dogs are tougher than people (mostly) and aren't hung up on limb loss in their minds.

Best of luck for the test results, and don't hesitate to lop off the affected part if you can afford it. Tough days ahead in any case, keep us posted and know we are here to help.

So sorry to hear about Owen.

Our "Sandy" 8 y/o 100 Lb Female Golden Retriever was diagnosed with terminal bone cancer in her left rear leg approx. 2 months ago. Our Vet gave us pills to control the pain. We were told that she has 3-9 months. Sandy has been doing well and is happy. She has slowed down as she does not use the affected leg, but still is having fun and enjoying life.

I know we have some tough days ahead.

We decided to get a Golden Doodle puppy to soften the blow.

My Big female German Shepherd is closing in on 12 years old. About 106 lbs. Hips are getting weaker, and now she's growing these tumors in her mouth, looks like blackberry jelly. We got one lasered out a few months ago, but the Vet said don't be surprised if they come back with a vengeance. And expect them to go to her lympth nodes and into her lungs. Or maybe not. She's doing real well right at the moment, slowing down, can't run her with the minibike like I do the others, and it pisses her off when the other guys get some minibike time and she doesn't.

I am very sorry to hear about your Pup. I wish you two all the best.

I too have decided to make another appt. for my 9 1/2 y/o girl. She has been limping around, the Vet I were thinking that it is the cold weather, but I have a funny feeling it is an ACL tear. I have been giving her Rimydal and Arthritis meds for a few weeks, but there has been no change. If I think about it too much- I get upset, I am afraid that it may be something worse.

Good Luck to you and your Pup.

So after 3 opinions, surgery to remove the affected limb plus chemo seems to be the unanimous best approach. All other joints good. No soft tissue tumors on the ultrasound. Chest film clear.

Scheduled for tomorrow.

Sorry to bump a bummer thread, this is good news.

Good luck, I'm wishing for the best for your dog. Mine is continuing to slow down, the black stuff in her mouth is coming back, we'll see what happens. She is a great old dog.
