Well? Are you stick-able or not?

And followup question - are people that drive sticks "cooler"?

I like how self-righteous "stick" drivers are. "If you know how to do it, it's not hard/bad/whatever."

Yeah, K. I know how to ride a bicycle and it's "not that hard" but I don't do that, either. It's much more effort than is necessary. Go ahead and keep giving yourselves cookies for being awesomer drivers, though.

I can but I suck at it. I admit it. I have killed many a clutch prior to deciding I should stick with automatics.

I drive both. Being stuck in gridlock sucks in a manual, no matter how much of a race car hero you think you are.

I learned to drive on a stick shift from 1970, Navigated it around SF for several years. I have an automatic now, so aside from the motos, I'm likely pretty out of practice.

Be curious to hear from folks who ride motos but don't drive stick.

Thankfully I live where I live and only have to deal with gridlock on occasion otherwise I'd likely have an auto for commuting.

the first car I bought was a manual trans, and I prefer manual transmission in most vehicles: but I feel I could be much better at shifting both in cars and motorcycles.
There is something almost magical when you get a shift just right and the engine is in the right part of the power band to help you corner just right.
I'd say my shifting is 80% accurate, but I still blow shifts and it's like fingernails on a chaulk board.

I've had a CDL for 25 years, so I regularly drive trucks with 10-speed, 13-speed, and 15-speed transmissions, as well as those with 5-speed transmissions and 2-speed axles. Plus my Jeep is a 5-speed. So I'd say I'm pretty decent at it.

As far as being cooler, I don't think so. I just prefer my driving to be a little more interactive.

I know some people think they're a pain in the ass, but then again, that goes for all things in life that give you more control. With power comes responsibility.

Thanks,

On my third vehicle that is a manual, although I do enjoy having a stick; there are times where I dread it. (ie: traffic conditions)

You could do that with paddle shifters or a manumatic. Would those count?

You crazy kids, always coming up with new futuristic stuff. :shame
(I've never driven or even seen one, or talked to anyone with one. Can't offer an opinion on what lack of a clutch does to it. Sorry.)

For the coolness factor - slamming the hammer just kicks butt. Chicks dig it a lot more than the unexpected shift of an automatic, and they like to see your forearm muscles as you toss that stick around. Shows them you are caveman and can work the car. ;)

I've never owned a car with an automatic transmission, starting with my Triumph TR-3. My current Lexus SC300 was hard to find with a 5-speed, but I wouldn't settle for an automatic. The next time I buy a new car (no plans for now), it will probably be much harder to find a conventional stick shift.

I finally got an automatic when it got to be too much to eat a hamburger, talk on the phone and use a stick shift in stop and go traffic. Something had to give.
