Can we start at 7 a.m.?

I really want to try Thunderhill West backwards with keigwins in late July, but it's just going to be too damn hot. The forecast right now is for a high of 110°. In a perfect world, we would be on track at 7 a.m. and we would do four sessions before lunch. I'm sure that's not possible, but that's the only way I would go to a track day at thunderhill when the forecast was for a high of 110°.

Unless it didn't cool off at night it usually doesn't reach max temp until 2pm.

Hydrate, keep a couple t-shirts wet in a bag in the cooler to wear each session, shade/A.C. in the truck when not riding your session.

Dan, you're the last to show up anyway But I get the idea. Too bad they won't let them get lunch in 20 minutes like at Laguna.

Make friends with the peeps in the air conditioned rigs.

Dan, I'm going for both days. It's usually cooler there than at the EAST track. Surely you can keep up with a 71 year old codger.

Could we start at 8? The sun is up at 5:30 and in a perfect world we'd start at 6 when it's 68 degrees. It's a shame that what could possibly be the best trackday of the year is going to be miserable and unattended because of the hot weather. I'm still tempted to go.

What makes this particular day so special compared to any other?

Have you considered the logistics already in place for the day and what the cost would be to change that based on the weather?

Would it matter? The heat really happens after lunch. I always figure 2 PM is when it gets bad. If we start at 8, and quit at four, we still ride the last two hours in the heat, instead of 3. And it's really not that bad. However, to start at 8, the entire track and TDP staff have to start early. That's another entirely different thread. That means I have to get up at 3:30 instead of 4:30 to drive up. That means 10-12 employees of the track, minimum, have to change their schedules for ONE day, and management as well. It's not a bad idea, necessarily, but probably better brought up to the track itself and not the TDP immediately before the trackday. Personally, it doesn't make much difference to me.

Ideally Thunderhill would introduce the idea, rather than one TDP trying to make the change.

Very good point. You mention the employees. I would bet a lot of money that the corner workers would rather work from 7 to 3 during the hot summer months.

it's a given if your doing Thunderhill in summer, it's going to be hot. Back when I was doing a lot of trackdays, I rode TH 4 times in 2 seasons, all in summer. It was 95'/98'/101'/108' (in the shade,) each time. In my avatar to
<<<--- the left, it was 108'. In the afternoon, I just PULLED IN when I felt myself getting tired. Typically a lap or two early muscling the big, heavy ZRX around (ain't no sportbike man, work!)

I just alter my plan (you should have one) for the trackday:

A known = hydrate/hydrate/hydrate, bring canopy & stay in shade
do most of your FULL riding/sessions in the morning before lunch
In afternoon, don't do ALL laps, pull in a lap or two early/save strength
IF you get too hot/feel concentration waning, pull in.
READ previous line again.
etc. etc. etc. etc.

It's all common sense, you can do summer trackdays @ TH, just make a solid plan, & stick to it. If you start to feel weak/losing concentration, PULL IN. Use your knoggin' & stay aboard. Listen to what your body tells you. Pull in if your feeling even slightly off. I did.

Kept me aboard...

Ta-daa.....:thumbup :teeth :ride

Or..... Save your money and/or ticket pack pass for a day when you can ride hard for every minute of every session. I'll ride motox Sunday at Argyll instead thank you very much.

EastbayDave did have great advice for those that do choose to ride when it's over a hundred degrees.

I'm sure they would. Would you also bet that they have schedules in their lives that are carefully set that include kids, schools, other responsibilities and re-arranging them? I'm sure if every day for two months was an early start, it would be feasible, but it's probably unworkable for a few days.

It was quite comfortable on day one. The west side gets more breeze and none of us were complaining. Day two was hotter in the PM, by 3PM most riders had called it quits. I had one 4PM session basically to myself

Yeah, EBD hit the points. I drank, easily, 1.5 gallons of water/gatorade on each day. Yesterday I drank another half gallon on the way home. I feel pretty good today. I also pulled in when I started missing things. It's absolutely true, make a mistake, come in and rest.

I've started hydrating early for these days, and grab a water bottle as soon as I come in.

I, for one, would rather sweat buckets and suffer in the interminable surface-of-the-sun-like central valley heat than have to get out of bed one single minute earlier.

Good news Dan, the Oct 14/15 Thill west weekend will run backwards again on Sunday. Probably wont be 105*.
