Can Someone Check Out A Cat Shelter For Me Please

Hey all

Long story, but I have a rescue who wants to save an elderly cat from Martinez shelter and take her into their program

When I spoke with the rescue coordinator at Martinez, she said this rescue facility is a warehouse with 300 cats in cages, and she won't allow the cat to be transferred there. She did say however that the last time she visited it was four or five years ago.............

So, what do I want. Can somebody please go check out this facility and provide me with your feedback on whether or not you would allow your cat to be sheltered here until they find a home? This shelter is described as No Kill, but that does (sometimes) raise the question "is it just a hoarding situation?"

Their website looks fantastic, their adoption numbers look great, but I would love to have a first hand account of what the place is like. How many cats are there, what the conditions are, average length of stay etc

If you don't want to ask questions, please just walk around and give me your honest opinion on the place

Photos would be brilliant too, if you can get any.

I don't want a rescue partner turned down because of ancient history, nor do I want to send our Martinez cats to a hell hole, so your help will be really appreciated

Thanks!!

:)

Thanks Rod

Yes, I see the good reviews, but this statement had me worried:

"Bottom line: This place is doing a good service, but I take one star off for how many cats are sick in there. I LOVE that this place is a no-kill shelter to allow all cats the opportunity to have good lives after adoption like my Cat #1. But to have SO many cats in such close quarters, there is always risk of disease being passed around."

and

"Since they accommodate a large number of lives, it is hard to stop spreading few common diseases across the pets but that definitely is not...."

and

"I didn't know it at the time but he had been there for two years - TWO YEARs in that place - until I adopted him"

These are the kinds of things that pop out at me, as a rescuer, when reading reviews: volume of cats, length of stay and overall shelter medicine protocols, which appear to be a bit lacking given the mentions of sick kitties

But I do appreciate you pointing me to Yelp, I hadn't thought of that.

I'm hoping Brighthaven rescue will take this kitty. She is 16 and is going downhill in the shelter environment, in a cage. To go to another rescue to a cage in a crowded environment is inhumane.

Would you like to adopt her Rod???

Thanks for the street view too, don't know why I didn't think of using these. dipshit that I am

Yeah, no. She isn't going there. That really is a warehouse, not purpose built as an animal shelter with all the correct air flow whatnot stuff that is needed for maintaining a healthy population. No, she isn't going there.

But look at this beautiful girl. Don't you want to adopt her????

I didn't go there myself Ducky cos I live in Concord and this place is in Redwood Shores :twofinger

And, what Mr Incredible said

Yes, orange cats are not everywhere, but I wouldn't go so far as to say they are rare

Here's a cat. Scotty, aka Bumper Kitty. My one and only foster at the moment. If he doesn't get adopted today I will be bringing home a friend for him, he is getting bored bless him

Wendy, was anyone able to check this place out?

As for the why cats?question. I have taken in both. The cats usually wind up affectionate, easy maintenance, and kill vermin. The people I have taken in have generally exhausted me, stolen from me, or moved on with the same behaviors they came with.

Sadly, this is typically one of the better outcomes from taking in people.

I swear if I take in another person needing a hand up they're going to have to get spayed/neutered first.

Well yes orange cats are not that rare, but I thought due to genetics of it most of the time orange cats are male. The female orange cat is much more rare.

The truly rare combination is a tricolor male, orange females aren't common, but they're not that uncommon either.
