California Insurance Check

So I guess this thread can fit here...

For those of you with insurance on your bike(s), which should be everyone :nchantr , I was wondering what the record check length for the state is. As in how far are the insurance companies required to look back at your driving record, 3 years? 5 years? Hopefully the former since my younger years were mischievous :teeth. My insurance as of my current quote will increase by $700/yr from IL to CA :thumbdown and that's looking back 3 years. I don't even want to see what 5 years will do.

Let me know what you know.

3 years, typically. One company asked me for 5 years. I didn't go with them.

Ya, Allstate asked for 5 years and quoted me $3k/yr without seeing my driving record.

I will likely stick with Progressive, but Nationwide has given me a good quote so far.

With Progressive I used to pay $427/month at one point for a 2005 Acura RSX Type S (Yes, I used to pay $5100+ per year for car insurance. I was speedy.)

I sold the RSX while I was paying $358/month and bought my monster... now I pay $53/month.

Insurance company: Lose
Me: Win

Anyway, I'm pretty sure Progressive goes 3 years.

Awesome, that's good news. Progressive is 3 years here in IL, but the Nationwide agent told me that it goes by state as to how far they look back. He could have been talking out his ass too... :shocker

It doesn't really work like that in CA. Points on your record stay there depending on the violation. A 1 point speeding ticket, for example, will stay on your record for 3 years. A DUI will stay on your record for 10 years. An insurance company will simply look at your driving record.

So, what they ask for has nothing to do with what they actually rate you by, that is just a tool to give you a quote quickly. They will use you driving record for the actual rate.

As Mr White pointed out, your driving record with the DMV is what is actually used. However, the insurance industry keeps its own database of your violations so they can look back much farther but they only use the DMV record for rates.

I'm an idiot. Yes, Mr White and JO EBRMC are correct.

I remember an agent once told me I had 11 points on my license..

WOOOO....:shocker

One, just one of my tickets is 13 points...

Not to mention probably 5 others for speeding, 2 suspensions, and hitting a truck on my DR650 :ride. You can see that accident in my ADV RR.

So, it looks like if progressive is kind enough to make my insurance affordable here, I might as well stick with them.

Thanks for the info guys! I appreciate it.

P.S. Not a bad driver, I was just young and stupid.

I don't know if ins. co share their data, but at least with State Farm, there's something called insurance points as well. For example, a crash on the track that's paid counts as 1 ins pt even when there's no DMV record.

has a decent amount to do with your zip code. i moved from sf to pacifica, and my insurance dropped 80 dollars. low risk -> high risk is going to cost more. welcome to kalifornia.

A lot of insurance companies look at total-payout from the previous insurers. My wife had just one point on her record, but the payouts increased her rates. The agent ended up putting both bikes on my name and saved us $350/yr.

well i have great rates so no other company is going to be lower. but even if they went back 15 - 20 years it would be clean.
now if they went back 30-40 years that would be a different horse. :wow

got smart and saved a ton of cash.
