I was just wondering if there is a published "cheat list." I've been reading your posts and it seems like some people have a big advantage if they are already familiar with certain bonuses and locations. How many of the bonuses were original to this rally?

We didn't know the route until an hour before the start and then we didn't know what was going to happen on the second part until 12 hours later at the first check in... it was all a mystery.. (insert Tom's crazy laugh)

That's the best part of this rally if you ask me! It's impossible to cheat..

Good question. I'm pretty sure they were unique for this rally, but can't say for certain as this rally goes back a long ways. But...I do know that they weren't unique for motorcycle rallies. Some of those that knew where the totem was in Gerlach were in and out, pretty much because they'd either been there before, or knew of the totem from others...but you can't predict that when you're the rally master and mapping the routes out, either.

One of the Iron Butt Rally point locations is a volunteer FD in Livermore that has a bulb burning for, I dunno, 80 years? It was easier to get there from Mt. Hamilton via San Fernado Valley Road and Mines Road, than going through the East Bay, but if you didn't know the area, you might end up taking the longer way around. Having familiarity of an area goes with having luck on your side, as you never know until you get the packet where you may end up.

The answer to your question is no, all bonuses weren't unique to this rally. The vast majority are, though. The Gerlach bonus is on many rallies, there is a shrine there on Guru lane for Iron Butt riders, so it's included whenever possible as an homage/tradition. Even if a location has been used before, it's likely that a different question may be asked, just so someone can't fill in the sheets with something they already knew.

But keep in mind, people are recording their mileage and time at each and every one of the bonuses they are going to, so they pretty much have to ride to exactly where they say they are riding to. (Or be awfully good with a chassis dyno that can simulate mileage and have damn good satellite photography to zoom into plaques and such).

But what sets the rally veterans apart is that they know that it takes X time to get from Alturas to Tulelake. And they know that getting through Leggett will take forever. So even if the specific bonuses are brand-new, the towns can't really be that new to someone who has been riding around in this area for decades. And by the time you get to where a bonus should be, more often than not you can find it quickly. This isn't a scavenger hunt where things are buried 500 yards from the main road under a bush and you have to search for hours. (though it feels like that sometimes). Generally, if you get to a bonus location, you'll be able to find it.

That totem pole was the exact example I was thinking of. There must be hundreds of examples like that in some black book somewhere.
