CA AB18 - $25 Firearms Excise Tax

Just wait until you order a gun online for a great price, have it shipped to your FFL and then walk out with it the same day you do the NICS check.

man, I miss that.

But, it also lead to me spending a LOT more money on guns. I'd walk in "just to look around" and come out 2k poorer with a couple pistols.

Grab-A-Gun has a pretty good deal on an S&W Performance Center 380EZ M&P2.0. I keep telling myself I don't need 2 one for each daughter. I have about 4 years before I truly have to worry about that I hope.

Back to our regularly scheduled programming. I hate extraneous taxes for no reason that will not be used for their intended purpose. :thumbdown

Only a one time tax? Just like the dros fee done on every gun is a one time fee. One time per transaction.

The bill reads:

This bill imposes a $25 excise tax, as of January 1, 2020, on the sale of a new firearm with proceeds to be deposited into the California Violence Intervention and Prevention (CalVIP) Firearm Tax Fund (FTF) for purposes of funding violence prevention grants to communities disproportionately affected by violence.

The bold above is mine. It looks like a one time fee to me.

One time fee per new firearm. I always thought it strange how the state treats new and used firearms differently.

Just found an old receipt from a pistol purchase back in 2012. Although its really faded the purchase price was $679.99. Out the door after all taxes and fees was $755.99. with this proposed tax the OTD price will jump to $780. Wait my safety certificate has expired so if I want to buy another pistol need to shell out another $25 to take the test again. And now we have the ammo background check too, good thing its only a buck per transaction. With more "fees" (taxes) being proposed each legislative session the costs of ownership just continues to get worse. No matter what, this state will find a way to siphon money from your pockets.

That was difficult to write without saying "fuck California"...oops there it is.

Only if your DL matches DOJ files.

If you bought a firearm and then moved, your DL no longer matches the DOJ records. If they can't find your DL in the DOJ, then you have to buy that good for 30 days, 1 transaction only Ammo Ticket or whatever for, what, $29?

It's really extraordinary. Pity the poor hunter coming in state who wanted a box of 20 rounds for their rifle because they forgot to pack it.

I reload so at this time I don’t worry about it. Also stupid law is stupid.

These fees are a way for the antis/cali politicos to get their foot in the door and slowly continue to pry it up with passing more and more bills/laws. These really are just deterrents for NEW gun owners to buy guns and make it a hassle for current owners to acquire more.

Just like adding all the bs to cigarette packs; those that already smoke aren't stoping but if they can prevent newbies from starting, that's their goal.

Foot? FOOT?

Pretty sure they're thigh deep already and working on reaching around with both hands.
