Going to pay taxes on a local bike as well, so that’s pretty much a wash.

What is so special about the 30th anniversary model?

You're going to pay taxes either way, correct. OP wasn't counting taxes in his total, Stan was pointing that out.

Looks like OP is clearly set on buying the bike, so all I can add is contact DMV and get the info straight from the horses's mouth.:afm199

1. Taxes have to be paid, whether it's local, out of state, private party, or whatever. Tax will be based on purchase price. (private party might help lower the number).

2. Honestly, nothing too special about the 30th Anniversary, except the color scheme (Green + Pearl White combo), which has really grown on me.

So if I find a decent bike with All Black (not my color choice), what are the chances I get get the Zx6r tank + fairings within $500 or so? :afm199

This "out the door" in TN price will have no CA tax or dmv fees.

Figure $750 for CA tax and DMV fees.

Figure $600-$800 to have it shipped by a reputable company from TN to CA.

Plus add in that you don't have the chance to look it over first.

Is that still a decent deal?

When I shipped my Zero from Alabama to CA it was $450 through uShip. I don't know if that is "reputable", but I think they have a review process.

I saved ~$2000 out the door/ all things considered buying out of state. My last 3 vehicles were from Texas, Florida and Alabama. I always look in state, but out of sate is just a better deal.

Be advised that if it's not CARB certified, or doesn't have at least 7500 miles on it, you cannot license it in California. An attempt to do so will put it on a black list so that it won't ever be able to be registered in the state.

Black list lasts 36 months then you can try again.

Is this written down anywhere that it can be verified?

I'm asking because next time this comes up I would like to be able to point to where it says it. I already have pointers to the rest of the rules on out of state vehicles.

OP, you have received advice, now go do what your heart tells you to do, and if it is to import the bike from out of state, please document the whole process and post it here.

you need to be careful because it is a kawasaki.

they were doing 49 state models up until at least 2013-14.

MAKE SURE you see a picture of the 50 state emissions sticker.

He already posted that is has 11k miles, so that's unnecessary.

Unless someone has already tried to import it to CA prior to it having 7.5k, in which case he apparently has to wait 36 months before being able to register it here again.

Clear as mud? :laughing

THANK6 EVERYONE!!!!

Took your advice and bought a local bike from Sacramento it was only $300 more than the bike I was about to import. BUT it has 3200 miles Vs the 11K I was about to buy. Is also has ABS.

The bike I was going to import could not confirm abs, although the dealer said it did have abs. But the pictures did not show the ABS light in the dashboard like it's supposed to.

All in all very happy.

Major PITA
Guys, thanks for the advice. I realize this is not the most ideal way to buy a bike (out of state, unseen). Having said that, my questions are related to this specific model/bike: 2015 Kawi ZX6R, with 11,000+ miles, sold by a bike dealer in TN.

- Can register it in CA?
- Is there a way to find a bike's history, in general, using a VIN?
- ANY other precautions I should take if I buy this bike?

Thanks!
CarFax says they can check motorcycles.
