Buying a new bike with miles already put on?

How many miles is too many?

How does it affect negotiating price?

Would you buy a “new” bike with 10 miles? How do I know someone didn’t redline the hell out of it? I’d prefer an easy break-in.

Edit- is it a BS line if the sales guy says the mechanic took it for test rides?

Can I buy a bike with 0/1 miles or do dealers always test the bike?

Edit- Got a new bike with 7 miles. Will ride it pretty normal but avoid hard starts and WOT for a while.

*shrug* probably around 25,000, that's usually around the most I look for when buying bikes.

The same as what color it is, what condition it's in, and whether the sales manager is in a good mood - i.e., negotiate using whatever points you can think of, and it's up to the dealer to work with you or not. If they think they'll get another buyer that doesn't care as much about the miles on it, then they won't work with you.

Yes.

How do I know someone didn’t redline the he’ll out of it?
You don't.

I’d prefer an easy break-in.
If it's new it comes with a full warranty, right?

Your question is answered with the sales price offered. If it's MSRP, I wouldn't buy a new bike with over 100 miles as there are plenty of other options unless that specific bike had something that made me want to pull the trigger (aftermarket exhaust, color combo, accessories, add'l services on the house by dealer).

Bikes have already been dyno tested at the factory up and down the rev range and gear box for quality control purposes before they even get to the dealer.

My KTM had ONE mile on the odometer when I bought it. They asked me if I wanted the one on the floor or the one still in a crate in the back and I asked for the one nobody had touched.

But up to 20 miles on the odometer seems pretty normal and I don't usually worry about it.

I thought part of new bike setup was a test ride to verify all is well? Most of my new bikes have had 3-5 miles on them. No way I would worry about 10 miles.

I've only bought two new bikes, both of them had -0- miles showing on the odometer. I checked the trip meter on one of them and it was at 0.1 mi.

Interesting.. I've bought a new one and have had as much as 6 miles on the odometer. Might have something to do with being out of the box, vs. on the floor for a while, I don't know.

I have worked at a dealer as a motorcyle mechanic. Typically I would take a 5 mile test ride on the bike after I inspected everything on the bike.

The mechanic that checks the bike out has to sign off on the bike. That document could be used in court if anything happen so I was for sure test riding the bike to make sure everything felt correct after inspecting it. I am surprised some of you guys bought brand new bikes with 0 miles on them.

Typically I would only find minor issues with brand new motorcycles. A 3rd party company would assemble all the bikes from crate to showroom floor so we would check the bike out before the customer received it.

Improper chain tension
No oil on air filter offroad motorcycles
Improper clutch cable adjustment
Improper drum brake adj
Improper throttle cable adjustment

Those were all very typical
