Burger King Subscription for coffee

BK has announced a subscription coffee deal ($5 per month or 17 cents per day) As part of their subscription they are upgrading their coffee and adding other so called "upscale" coffee drinks. Maybe not worth a drive but if it's on your route and the improved coffee tastes passable...

Ok, you might not go in on this but if it gets traction expect others to follow (MCD, Jack in the Box etc) and if it does well enough the likes of SB and Peets might have to follow suit.

Naturally they expect customers to also buy other things.

Forget the idea of BK coffee for a moment but what about as a business decision and the ramifications for other "restaurants"? Do you think this will be disruptive to the other fast food eats places? (MCD charges a buck for a cup)

I think it’s a good idea. Coffee is as cheap of a cost as it gets for a restaurant. So why not use it as a loss leader. All it takes is maybe is 20% of the people that come in to add one one of those putrid Crossanwiches to their coffee, and BK is doing just fine.

Look at Vegas. They give away much more expensive drinks as loss leaders to steer people towards their true money maker.

Just drive in foot traffic, and if you have decent products to sell, you’ll do just fine.

I think it’s a different dynamic at those places. People sit around there for hours on their MacBooks sucking up the free WiFi anyways. Why enable them any more by more or less setting them up with unlimited coffee. Plus they sell “premium” coffee, so they wouldn’t want to show the world how cheap it really is by making it a loss leader. Either that, or make the subscription much more than what BK is charging.

A bold gambit to draw the early to mid morning retiree social gathering crowds that are currently meeting at McDonalds!

I stopped in BK today just to see what their "upgraded" standard coffee is like. I've never had a cup of their stuff and don't eat there either. Brewed at home tastes better than anything I've found but a DMV appointment to get hosed seemed like as good a time as any try it while wasting the time away.

The "small" cup isn't, it's about the size of a medium it seems so if you're paying the 17 cent subscription rate, compared to the others it's worth it. I asked the money taker if I could get a refill and she said "sure if you are eating in". I wasn't going to hang around but they have do have free wifi.

The place wasn't busy but it does sit right across from a SBucks. It will be interesting to see if this gets people in the door. Why the interest? If it moves the needle it might also move their stock share price.
