Have any of you had issues with converting optical outs to analog (or whatever the correct term is)?. I won a new tv and had to purchase a little convertor box to work with living-room headphones. The whole setup seems sketchy and a new hum on my FM receiver is making me wonder...I can hook up to either my tv directly or the cable box and not sure if there are pros or cons on that too...I was thinking about moving over to a sound bar as well so following with interest.

I feel your pain. I had to replace my Amp/receiver/surround sound because it was old school. It was still working great but I had a choice of getting a converter (definitely non-optimal) for the digital signal or buy a new amp that took it as an input.

Yeah, same here, with good old receiver/amp in addition to headphones.... Subwoofers and nice speakers..In fact new tv is really short on inputs and outs. 2 HDMIs, an optical, coax and USB. I guess there is an Ethernet, not even sure (I'm at work).

I don't care so much about surround, just something better than cheezy tv output.

FM receiver?

You have the TV going from digital optical out to a converter and then to a stereo receiver into which you plug your headphones?

Are their speakers connected to the receiver as well?

No, at this time directly to wireless headphone cradle because I don't want to have to turn on stereo everytime I watch tv. I actually then switched convertor to output on back of cable box for some reason I can't remember. I use the headphones for silence for Ms BA, who doesn't like some of my favorite programming....

Reception on headphones has also suffered. Maybe its just xmas tree lites, coming down soon.

If I'm willing to power up amp, I could run the convertor to the receiver instead then use old fashion plugs to headphone. You know, big spaghetti cable mess, solid back cabinet with the holes. I CAN do it, just haven't and not sure what I would gain. And yes, speakers and subwoofer are a part of original stereo system. Nice old set that works fine for music. I had it hooked up to my old teevee (that had the old connectors).

If I'm approaching this wrong, tell me because there is always more to know as this tech changes. I don't understand potential for static, sound delays, etc etc. The headphones have never been in sync with teevee sound for starters, which is annoying....

The Denon site says 70 watts and the Amazon refurb says 140 lol

both are correct.

Usually a receiver rated for 70W @ 8Ohms will deliver 140W @ 6 Ohms.

Op should save $ and get soundbar+sub or get a $200 PC speaker system that has HDMI and optical inputs in addition to Bluetooth headphones and rca or the 3.5mm Jack's.

I'd start with a budget first and go from there

I still use a 1992 Pioneer 100wpc stereo receiver with some Paradigm Atoms as my bedroom stereo. It has the old school volume dial that moves when you use the remote and you don't want past "2"

Wow thanks for all the great responses! I feel especially dumb because I found the receipt and it turns out I did buy the 2 year protection. The Geek was able to get them to pair so I brought it home and...it won’t pair again. I turned off all the things that could interfere with the signal and still nothing.

So I’ll bring it back tomorrow and have them walk me through it. I feel like a failure as I’m in my 30s and should be able to figure this shit out.

Just picked up the JBL Bar 3.1 this evening. It sounds pretty damn good, we tried everything Best Buy had in the $300-400 range and this took it. 10.5" sub that effortlessly fills in all the missing weight of the smaller speakers. For three bills I'm impressed.

No, at this time directly to wireless headphone cradle because I don't want to have to turn on stereo everytime I watch tv. I actually then switched convertor to output on back of cable box for some reason I can't remember. I use the headphones for silence for Ms BA, who doesn't like some of my favorite programming....

Reception on headphones has also suffered. Maybe its just xmas tree lites, coming down soon.

If I'm willing to power up amp, I could run the convertor to the receiver instead then use old fashion plugs to headphone. You know, big spaghetti cable mess, solid back cabinet with the holes. I CAN do it, just haven't and not sure what I would gain. And yes, speakers and subwoofer are a part of original stereo system. Nice old set that works fine for music. I had it hooked up to my old teevee (that had the old connectors).

If I'm approaching this wrong, tell me because there is always more to know as this tech changes. I don't understand potential for static, sound delays, etc etc. The headphones have never been in sync with teevee sound for starters, which is annoying....

A new digital input receiver can be had quite inexpensively but it sounds like you don't want to do that.

I have a modest 3.2 setup in my secondary room and it could be replicated for a bit more than soundbar money.

3.1 or 3.2, assuming you have space for the receiver and center channel near the TV is definitely a step up from a soundbar assuming you have once in a while need for "loud."

I've had 5.1 since the mid 80s before such things as audio video receivers and dedicated center channels even existed; took about $10k in today's money to pull off what you could replicate today from about $1200.

I have zero desire to do 5.1.4 Atmos until my current receiver dies and then I might consider it with in ceilings for the Atmos effects but that would mean lowering my rears which could be problematic as they would need to be no higher than 1/2 way up the wall.

My couch is right up against the back wall and having the rears placed above my end tables but at ear height when standing gives a great effect.

Lowering them would localize the surround sound when seated on either end of the couch though so might just stick with 5.1.

When my 15" 1250 watt sealed servo sub dies again, (cost $700 to repair the amp and self eq boards), I might just go with two 12" sealed servos instead.

In my secondary room I have two small subs as I couldn't place a single one near the front three speakers and one sounded too localized under the right hand end table but adding a second under the left hand end table gave marvelous results as the bass comes from nowhere/everywhere vs "over there."

Well this geek squad protection is annoying. They couldn’t replicate the guy’s success from last night so they have to “send it in” for who knows how many weeks.

In the meantime I picked up a Samsung 5.1 bar/sub from Costco. If I end up with a new replacement for my old one maybe I’ll sell it and keep this one. Or use Costco’s nice return policy.

As much as I’d like to drop a grand on a new setup that would be infinitely better than any bar, I just have a hard time spending so much for something so unnecessary.
