I’m going thru the process of getting my wr a salvage title and I have to do the the brake and lamp inspection. Anyone know of some places that do this in Sf or around the area? I know there are a few threads but nothing that’s really up to date so that’s why I ask.

Thanks for the help

Castro Valley Union 76 is where you want to go. There are many shops in the bay area that do brake and lamp inspections, however very few will do motorcycles. Of the few that will inspect motorcycles, most are very expensive.

Castro Valley Union 76 will inspect motorcycles. The cost is about $80 total for both inspections.

You should know that they only have one technician who is licenced to do the inspections and he is VERY picky. I've had him inspect two motorcycles and both failed the first time. The first bike failed because the light illuminating the licence plate was visible from behind. He suggest I buy a small bottle of paint from a local hardware store and black-out a portion of the lens. 30 minutes later he re-inspected and I passed. Last year he inspected another motorcycle and failed it because the rear brake felt too spongy. I had to go home and make some repairs before that one would pass. The good news is they don't charge unless you pass.

They don't take appointments, however good to call ahead to see how busy they are.

Fuck I don’t even have a license plate light. I have an intergrated rear brake/turn signals. Do I need mirrors too?

This was just used as a dirt bike mainly so I took off all
That stuff.

I would suggest you have everything that would normally be on a street bike and in working order including all lights, signals, horn, mirrors, etc. You can always remove them after the inspection. If something is questionable and you try to argue with him you'll just get a lecture on how he doesn't want to risk loosing his licence. I tried and didn't get away with anything.

Many years ago Fremont Cycle Salvage did inspections and Mike would let a lot of things slide. But those days are gone.

Right on. I just ordered everything. Front and rear turn signals, license plate light, tail light, front headlight and high beam works, new mirrors, horn works.

OXMART Motorcycle Turn Signals 2pcs LED Rear Turn Signals Amber Turn Signals Universal Fit for Honda Shadow Suzuki Kawasaki Harley Yamaha https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07G96Y3VQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_G2u-EbY5G1KWM

Will something like these be fine for turn signals or do they need to be the oem huge ones?

As long as everything works and illuminates in the correct color (no red light facing forward, no white light facing rearward) you should be okay. I don't think he ever looked for "DOT" certification markings.

That’s exactly what I was trying to get at with the dot thing. Right on. I’ll just hook it all up and see what happens. Thanks for your help, I just called and touched base with him. We shall see how it all goes when I’m ready to rock.

Thanks again :)

I always wonder when I see plates tucked like that: do cops hassle you for it? It looks like an attempt to avoid bridge tolls.

My indie one man shop said that he can do it and that any certified motorcycle mech. can do bikes. He tells me this after I had a local car repair/smog station do it. The guy was inspecting his 1st bike and said "I just need to see it stop and brake lights come on". $125!! My mech. tells me he charges $20.
