Boston Dynamics, Do You Love Me?

Alright, I've seen this discussion going other places about this video and I'm curious about barf's opinion: is this real or cg?

I'm in camp cgi: the lighting and shadows just feels off to me. The foam floor mats aren't deforming under the weight of the robots. The robots enter the camera frame just a little too magically when they weren't visible in the opposite shot.

I think they're cg over a practical shot of the room. I'm sure that all of Boston Dynamics's robots are capable of these movements, but not all together in concert.

Which is kinda surprising because they've built their reputation making videos that are almost impossible to believe, but are real.

You can see the texture change in the reflectivity of the floor mats as the robots move around into different spaces. It goes from being shiny to being scuffed from the robot's feet.

Cool vid tho. If it's not CG I wouldn't be surprised- note that none of the robots had to do anything but play back pre-programmed choreography, no interaction with other robots or fixed objects, just playback. I don't see anything that beggars belief so I'd say "no CGI" personally.

Yea, I was curious about the CG debate, and frankly, it simply hinges on where the video came from.

If this came from Boston Dynamics directly, then it's not CG. I don't think they would do that.

Watched again and you can see the mats deforming, but the robots are designed to absorb shock, so unless it's on "tiptoe" there's not enough force to make the deformation visible/noticeable.

Stills of tiptoe impacts showing deformation:

Fear me!
Real to me since it's from their official channel. I don't see any motivation for BD to fake this, esp when the buyout by Hyundai for $1.1B was announced a few weeks ago.
bunch of bored nerds with a cool idea :thumbup. tiktok robot :)

Scandalous

Hella legit
That two-wheeled balance-y thing is the stuff of nightmares, although the humanoids are coming along nicely. I'm sure the DOD is salivating over the next gen model that can go full-on Elysium or Chappie mode with guns blazing.

I'm surprised that buyout was approved... You'd think it would have been ITAR or something along those lines.

Doesn't seem like a good idea to lose that tech.

I watched a video a few years ago where some guy supposedly built a huge robot using parts from a Mini car and Lidar. I'm sure it was fake but it was still awesome. Looked totally real. Maybe someone can find and link it.

A car in space...hmmmm.

Its the Camera, there was a NFL game on this weekend with the Eagles and after one of the Touchdowns they cut to some weird camera that had everyone thinking they were watching a cut scene from Madden it was weird.

The hyper saturated colors was part of what engaged my consideration that it was CG, but I think it's also the lack of motion blur in the robot's motion. I think the camera op filmed with a high shutter speed, which is normally undesirable - unless you're deliberately going for the Saving Private Ryan look.

But then you can also create fake motion blur in CG pretty easily.
