bike leaking a steady stream of oil......*sigh*

Hey guys, would appreciate your help on the diagnostic and fixing process involved.

I was notified by building security that my bike was leaking a steady stream of oil. when i got out there it had slowed to a steady drip. The image below shows where the oil was leaking from. i felt around that metal piece and it looks like the oil is leaking from up behind it.

Some immediate concerns: its in my work parking lot. i cant put oil in it because presumably it would just fall right back out, but i do have oil at home. i have the tools to take that stuff apart, but i'd be lying if i told you i knew what i was doing.

Unlike my previous actions about this bike, im going to take this one nice and slow and easy and most importantly, patiently.

Who should I call and what should i do and what pictures/angles do you guys need? I'm at work right now, but i can go out there and take some detailed pics. The bike below is not mine, i just wanted to show you where the oil is leaking from.

it could be from the counter shaft seal, the water pump's oil seal to the crank case or even the shift shaft seal.

A fellow barfer and I just did a sprocket change on the bike. rear and front sprockets. think the problem might have something to do with that?

Also, i notice you fix peoples rides.

as it turns out, my ride could use a bit of fixing

Was also going to say based on where the arrow points, it looks like a leaky seal or an over-torqued bolt that stripped out.

Just my armchair guess without knowing a ton of detail

If you overfilled oil it could have pushed out the clutch pushrod oil seal. If you put the chain on too tight it could have distorted the countershaft oil seal (unlikely). As it started after you "fixed" it, think about what you did that could have been problematic. Oil filter loose?

changed front and rear sprocket but if anything the chain is a bit loose right now.

oil was filled by a shop and then i rode about 400 miles before this happened. i dont have first hand account but the eye witness said it was "leaking a steady stream of oil" so something must have happened after i turned it off. i dont see any spots of oil in the parking lot leading up to my space, and i didnt see anything leaking when i put my disc lock on this morning.

dunno if oil filter is loose, havent been able to check it just yet.

Water pump is where i think the problem is. maybe a bad o-ring or some loose bolt or something. without having it taken apart i cant tell though. the pics I took arent great and there wasnt much room to maneuver the camera.

Hello shrimants, very nice meeting you at the BARF Bash.

I am VERY sorry to hear of your latest problems with the bike! You must rightfully be very discouraged now. I certainly would be.

The ONLY good thing about this bike is it is providing you a continuing education: in mechanics, in emotional control, and in perseverance.

I hope some day you will be able to look back on your entire experience with this bike (lol, I accidentally typed "bile") and if not actually smile, then at least not cry. :)

I suggest, for the future, you leave off the disc lock and hope for the best! :p

Good luck on this problem, and remember Friedrich Nietzsche's quote: "That which does not kill us, makes us stronger." You will be so much stronger as a result of owning this motorcycle! :thumbup

Might start with the countershaft nut that holds on the front sprocket, in that that was the last thing worked on.

just looked @ the photo album & the last 2 pics clearly show a gap between the water pump & crankcase, iirc that gap isn't supposed to be there.

last time that happened to me I need a new shortblock because a rod or two had let go.....

Do I see a missing bolt on the last picture?
In the version of that pic above, with the black arrow, look about an inch below the arrow.
Is there supposed to be a bolt there or is the bolt coming from the other direction ?

im fairly sure that the bolt is coming in from the other direction. its the bottom bolt of the water pump that holds that whole thing together.

The gap is where i think the oil is coming from also, but perhaps it is coming from above that area somewhat as well? i cant think of how that gap might have gotten there. stripped bolts? is it just a matter of retapping the hole and using a bigger size screw to fit?

remember to engage the pump shaft with the gear in the motor, don't just tighten it down without it being properly engaged or you'll be replacing a bunch more stuff.
