Best sushi in SF?

I just spent 2 months backpacking through Europe and I have a crazy sushi craving since Europe didn't have any good Oriental food. I'm visiting my sis for a week and since I don't live here anymore I don't know the restaurants well enough. I've always liked barfers' recommendations better than yelp.

FYI - my favorites are crunchy rolls, amaebi, maguro, and I am always searching for places that serve huge hotategai instead of the chopped version.

Now I'm getting hungry just typing this... :)

If you're a traditionalist for sushi then you're on your own but I like "Moshi Moshi" on 18th & 3rd st. "I Heart Sushi Teriyaki" on 16th & Potrero and "Ichiban" on Geary and I think it's 3rd Ave.

I have to say that I really like Moshi Moshi and Ichiban.

On the traditionalist side, it probably doesn't get better than Sebo.

Ichi Raku on Geary & 2nd Avenue is my fav. They have a really large array of rolls. I will check about the hotategai chopped vs. whole tonight. I know that the spicy scallop is chopped, but in big pieces, not like spicy tuna. Pete always gets the oysters on the half shell, they're his fav anywhere. We go here at least once a week and I have a roll I invented on the menu. :teeth (Average about $25/person)

Others swear by Kabuto on Geary & 16th Avenue. Less interesting rolls, but some of the fish is of higher quality, and it's much more expensive. (average about $35/person) I liked it but wasn't that impressed.

Moshi Moshi is excellent, but very pricy. They have a broiled halibut collar that is amazing. (average about $45/person) I really really liked this place, but it's a bit expensive for once-a-week sushi.

Also in the excellent/pricy range ($35-40) is Hamano on Castro and 24th Street/Jersey in Noe Valley. This is where we went when I was a kid, my parents like this place.

Mas Sake is good, but waaaayyy overpriced. I went with a friend who knew the owner, so we got a bunch of "freebies" and it was still expensive. It's the Marina.

BTW, I don't drink, so these prices are with 2 of 4 people NOT having beer or sake or ordering any beverage at all.

For quality of fish - Hime on Lombard and Scott. No other place has amaebi or hotate that is even close to comparable. Get the take moriawase and if you like grilled fish, the hamachi kama. Beware, there are only two or three available per night, as they come in fresh daily.

Oh, and Sunday (and I think Wednesday and Thursday) is $1 draft Sapporo.

This.

One of my fiancee's students is the son of Michael, the owner of Sebo. (He's also the namesake.) As a gift, he gave us a gift certificate to his restaraunt.

GOD. DAMN.

Hands down, without a doubt, THE best sushi I've ever had in my life. Better than the sushi I had when my Japanese father in law took me out for sushi, in Japan. It's that good.

Just going by the quality of the food, the best place I've been to in SF is Ino Sushi, next to the Radisson Miyako hotel in Japantown. It's probably the best sushi I've had since I left Japan, so I use it as my measure against every other Japanese restaurant I go to. The place is run by a husband and wife duo, very traditional, so no rolls. Pretty pricey, I did the omakase and it ran about $65/person. The biggest drawback to the place is the chef is not friendly at all, and is actually a real asshole toward his wife. He spends the most of the night barking orders at his wife and insulting her, calling her stupid and what not. If you don't understand Japanese, you might not notice so much, but I found it quite disturbing.

Other places in SF that I've liked: Okina, Koo, Yo's Sushi Club, Eiji, Tanuki

I lived right next door to Moshi Moshi, and I have a chow mix, and the owner of Moshi Moshi used to have a chow. I think he loved my dog so much he gave me a discount.

And yes, the collar is awesome!!!

I liked Koo as well, but thought it was a little over-priced. Like I said, I eat a LOT of sushi (2 times per week?) so I want value. Moshi Moshi is expensive, but I felt the quality and selection was worth it.

Damn, now you've all given me some (expensive) sushi places I want to try!!

Oh, in Mountain View (on San Antonio) Masa's is really really good.
