I know, I know, this shit has been done to death. But, bear with me here.

Say you:

1. got 500 bucks and you want a handgun.

2. You don't want a Glock

3. You really want a nice 1911 but can't afford it

What would you buy and why?

Sigpro?

Short answers with no politics, religion, or race stuff will be highly appreciated!:laughing

Thanks in advance.

Best handgun for robbing a house where the home owner is using a 12 gauge with #8 birdshot would definitely be a .380 auto.

Save up and buy the handgun you want.

:twofinger

+1. At $500, you are less than a couple hundred bucks away from a decent 1911.

IMO the only handgun that can be had new for less than $500 and is worth a damn is GLOCK. Why don't you want a GLOCK?

:rofl:rofl:rofl

Why not 22 short?

Overkill, man. .22 short is perfect.

/thread.

My choice would be the S&W Sigma .40.

Even better :thumbup

Thanks for the responses.

-Not going with the Rock Island. Just felt like junk to me. Although, it is the only 1911 in that price range.

-CZ75: Nice pistol. Not as cheap as I would have thought & if I was going 9mm I'd buy a Browning HP or a Beretta, although I'd consider the CZ. All the CZ stuff seams to be really nice.

I want a .45, or at the least .40, should have mentioned that.

Glock: After a lot of looking/research, certainly the best bang for the buck out there. No doubt about it. But, it just feels huge/boxy as hell to me. The trigger is.....uh...not what I am used to. I hate it. That said, I did shoot a couple of boxes through a Glock 19 a few years ago, and to be honest I couldn't miss with that gun. And, in the 80's my dad did extensive testing on Glocks. He hated them so much (he used to build 1911's) he did everything in his power to make it not work. He failed. He hates them even more now, lol! Part of me can't get over the "safe fire" deal they have going. My buddy who carries one has some weird trigger block thingie that pops out when you draw the pistol and just lays there on the ground until you are done gun fighting, then I guess you look around on the ground for the thing? I don't know, that's just funny.
I want to carry this shit cocked and locked Mexican style without blowing my dick off!! J/K.

At any rate, here's what it comes down to when I talk to anyone who knows guns and I say "1911":
"KIMBER,KIMBER,KIMBER,KIMBER,KIMBER,KIMBER,KIMBER,KIMBER,KIMBER,KIMBER"

I compared a Colt Commander to a Kimber today (same price), and the Colt had a plastic trigger and backstrap! WTF? Trigger felt like a joke. Kimber felt awesome.

I went to the City Arms in Pleasant Hill Friday (based on Roman's rep here) and the dude put the Kimber in my hands (after me telling him I wanted to spend 500:laughing) and it just felt right. It was perfect in every way.....except is was 900.00. But, admittedly, I can't imagine getting anything better for the price. But, I don't shoot that much anymore and just want something useful, that feels right, for not a ton of money.

They did have a nice SigPro .40 that was interesting though. Anyone tried the SigPro??

Might end up saving a bit more as Obscura advised. I feel like a woman who can't figure out which purse to buy.:(

I love my SIGs, but I don't buy the polymer SIGs, it's just not to my preference.

They seem okay enough, though.

If you can find (or Roman can find for you) a used/consignment CZ in .40, that might work for you. I realize it's not a Kimber, but if you're looking for a solid hunk of metal in .40, that performs well, for something approximating your budget, you're looking at used guns. And used price/performance guns, i.e. Glocks, CZs, etc. You won't find a 1911 of any variety, especially in CA, in your budget, unless it's used and beat to hell.

I'd honestly save up $1,100 ( that is if you go the Kimber route ), you have to factor in CA tax and DROS after all. Plus, you'll want to pick up some ammo once the ten day jail period is over.

Kimber's and Sig's also have a .22 LR conversion kit, so instead of rattling off 45's, you can pick up a couple bricks of .22's and go apeshit at the range all day long.

When it comes down to it, pick the firearm that you'll be happy with, you're the one firing it after all.

If it's a Glock, awesome. If it's a Kimber/Colt/H&K/etc, that's just as awesome.

It's all operator preference.

Also, look at the Sig P220 Combat, it's sexy. :sex

Not as fast as I look.

I don't go for this concept, when someone is interested in home protection and not shooting paper for fun. I don't even like shooting .38s out of a .357, because the behavior can be so different from actual "combat" use. From a .45 to a .22????? I would just get a NICE .22 target pistol, instead.

To hit a target, you have to practice.

You have no idea how many people come into the shop, asking for home defense and then getting all ornery when I tell them they have to practice, when it comes down to it, muscle memory is the only way you'll be able to defend/protect yourself and those around you in a high stress situation.

The OP seems to be on a budget, so a 22 conversion kit for his 45 would be in his interest, it allows him to use his defensive platform, but with a cheaper round to go plinking. Then when he's done, he can switch the slide and barrel back to it's original configuration for when he's home.

Though the key phrase is, "I don't go for this concept." That's you, not the OP. To each their own.

Frankly, I'm very surprised that Kimber is so highly recommended to you. I used to think that Kimber 1911s were the shit. Now they are just shit. The older ones were pretty damn nice. The new Kimber IIs are hit and miss. More miss than hit. Their tolerances are crap, and the internals are now largely MIM. On top of that, Kimber doesn't really back their product. For that kind of money, Blackhawk and Wilson Combat are where it's at. Les Bear ain't bad either.

IMO the Springfield 1911s are the best quality for the cash. Much better made than Kimber, and cheaper to boot.
