I am going to the Ktm Adventure Rider Rallye in Riggins Idaho. Leaving on the 9th of sept. So far it looks like Hwy 80 to Elko then north to Idaho through the desert of northern Nevada.

Then kind of wing it from there. I only have so much time off, But I would like to ride as much off road as possible. Looks like alot of fun. Will be doing some video as well.

Lets talk. Richard

Richard: you are travelling into dirt road heaven. There are thousands of miles of maintained roads where you are going. Many of them are only slight diversions from the main routes or can be used as cut-offs to same some miles (almost never saving time though.)

I took a peek at my Nevada Atlas (I don't have an Idaho Atlas) and there's lots of stuff north of 80 from Elko or before it that go north. I would suggest picking up the Benchmark Atlas for Nevada and Idaho and having a peek if you're serious about taking off the pavement. I've found that they're the most accurate of the altas books, easy to tell the difficult roads from the easy ones, and easy to use.

If you're not sure about gas, google the town name and "gas" then call ahead to make sure it's still there. If you've got a GPS plug the waypoints into it to make navigation easy.

Riggins, Baby !!.

Hey Boney, Thanks for the input. I can't decide whether to go north from Nevada City, Ca to 395 to Oregon then make a right towards Fields Oregon then north through Juntura Oregon then onward to Halfway Oregon.

I could also go 80 towards Wells Nevada then follow my topo atlas through northern Nevada then into south western Idaho then into Boise. I have made a potentcial contact in Sun Valley who said he would lead me the back way to Riggins. I need to follow up on that one.

Heres the problem, I am leaving friday morn to go to my first stop in Nevada City, Via Highway 88 to Gardinerville, From the bay on my ST1300 then north to reno then spend the night in Nevada City, Saturday I have to fix the rear flat on the 990. I do not have internet access up there. So I will have to bring the lap top to the internet cafe to see if any body going that way has replied to my post.

If not I will be on my own to go to Riggins. I am a little apprehensive on doing off roads on my own, Theres a lot of lonely land out there if you fall. Although I will have my GPS locator on me. Well, At least they would find me dead !!!??? lol

I am on the fence on what to do. This might be the last time I reply to you untill I get back on the 16th or 17th. Go pick up a 990 on sat and I will meet you in Reno on Tuesday morn and we can do off road all the way there.

Okay, Its over for me. Good night. Richard Thanks Again Cya

I'm on the east coast right now so I have the chance to catch you before you go.

Get a paper map from AAA or the gas station. All the roads listed will be passable by a car even if they not paved. Most likely the backroads in that area will not be paved so you have the chance of getting in some nice groomed dirt. If you go through fields don't forget to get a milkshake, also, there's camping in the grove of trees across the street or up the road near the springs by Alvord Lake.

Fields camping

I thought I should bring my camping gear. I will dig it out now. I went on a Mexico to Canada trip back in 99'. We stopped in Fields but I can't remember if we stayed there. Okay, I am off to gather my camping gear. I will look for that camp ground in fields. I should be going through there next week wednesday or thurs. Cya Richard
