Do you have to bolt these things down or do they stay in place with the weight of the bike being tied down?

No need to bolt. Just set it against the front of the bed. Don't even have to tie the bike down all that tightly with one of these either.

I don't bolt either but I do ratchet tiedowns and compress the suspension, both bars and the rear

Not as fast as I look.
I guess I will be the conflicting vote, here. I have had bikes move and fall over when the Baxley wasn't either ratchet tied-down or bolted down AND the bike tied down, too. That is in a trailer where it is not against a wall, on a linoleum flooring.

They are great for race bikes in the pits, btw. Just roll in and get off.
