Adverse Selection
Mathydoode started a great thread in 2010 asking folks for their opinions regarding the #1 road in California. It was a lively and informative thread. So much so that Bud and the modz have decided to have you, the members, name the #1 road/loop in California for 2011!

Here's how it works. There is a poll above this post with a list of roads/loops that were suggested in Mathias' thread. Vote for one, and one only. Your selection will be public. We will take the top six vote getters and set up group rides to explore each one for the purpose of evaluation for the title of "BARF's #1 Road in California"!

A few limitations and caveats:

  • Just like some racing promoters, the mod core reserves the right to modify the top six to include roads/loops that align with the spring & fall ralies
  • The list is limited to roads that can be hit in a weekend from the Bay Area. This means some roads in SoCal will not make the list. The southern limit is Ventura County
  • Modz reserve the right to group roads into longer loops that can all be evaluated in one weekend
  • You may not submit a route evaluation for the route you nominated. This is for the purpose of objectivity, and it explains why the poll is public.

We will have one group ride per month, and each month will address a different one of the six nominated roads/loops. Two of these group rides will take place in the context of the BARF spring and fall rallies. You can participate in the group rides to explore these roads, or you can do so independently, but if you choose to ride independently, you need to provide documentation to establish that you actually rode the route. Acceptable documentation will include a subset of typical IBA stuff. In this case you'll need to provide:

  • Computer generated gas receipts from gas stations related to the route with times and dates that match your ride
  • A photo of you and your bike in front of a recognizable landmark on the route
  • For extra credit along with submitting your scores, write a story explaining your scores and why the road or loop is/is not #1 in California

A the completion of your ride you need to send me an e-mail through BARF with your documentation and your scores for the route. We will hold the scores secret until October so that scores for earlier roads don't unduly affect the scores for the routes ridden later in the year. Once all the rides are complete, the mod core will pore through the evaluations submitted to determine the winner!

Criteria & Scoring:

Mathias initially identified a great list of criteria, so we will start with those with some modification:

  • Road surface quality
  • Scenic attributes
  • Quality of road camber & sightlines
  • Challenge
  • Automobile traffic
  • Intensity of LEO presence
  • Length of route
  • Distance from the Bay Area (hint: closer is better)

Each of these criteria is worth ten points, with ten meaning absolutely the best imaginable, and one meaning it totally sucks donkey balls.

You have between now and March 1st to vote for the nominees listed above. If you want to nominate a road that is not on the above list, propose it in the thread, start a write-in campaign, and we will take it under advisement. In March the modz will take the votes and begin to put together a plan to ride them all. We will then announce the rides, and you are welcome to join them as you wish and your schedule and finances permit.

Shouldn't you rename it #1 road in Norcal with the above restriction? :nerd

Awesome idea though! So many good ones to choose from it's tough. I want to ride them all! I had to vote for 36 though. Ebetts pass is pretty damn good too though. So is 49. Argh, it's been chosen, I can't waffle now.

Edit: I agree with Monkeythumpa. I liked 36 because it had all types of road surfaces. They are fun for different reasons.

Point of clarification...

For road surface, is smoother or rougher better? I like both!

Me too. Road surface relates to smoothness. Smoother = better. Challenge can relate to roughness or other characteristics that make a road more challenging.

We're the BAY AREA Riders Forum. We can be as Bay-centric and self-referential as we wanna be. :x

Besides, we had to make it achievable in a weekend for more than just the IBA vets. :laughing

Meeeh, too hard

Can one only vote if you submit evidence of having ridden it? I read It and it's not clear to be but I am tarded

The poll above is to nominate a road to be included among the six that we will actually evaluate. You can vote for any road on that list. You can do write-ins for roads not on that list. But you can only vote for one. The poll closes in March.

At that time the mods will put together the top six, and we will organize group rides to the purpose of evaluation. There will be six rides, one per month, starting in April and ending in September. Anyone can come on any of those rides, and submit an evaluation, but at that point you must ride the road to submit an evaluation.

This poll is only for the purpose of narrowing the list to six roads. What road do you think belongs on the list of the six?

More clear? Should I edit my first post?

Tioga Pass (Hwy 120 through Yosemite)? Can that be added, that's the one I would of picked.

Michael

Organize a write-in. If you can get enough folks to post in the thread that Tioga needs to be on the list, and they don't vote for any other roads, it will make the cut.

I built the list from the roads most cited on Mathydoode's thread. Tioga did not come up much if at all. :dunno

178 is too far? I've only ridden it once and it was at night so I could barely tell what was going on, but I know for sure it's the nicest road I've never seen.

Oh and I'll vote -1 for Tioga Pass. That road would be awesome except for the completely infuriating traffic.

Help me out. Where's that? If I knew, I can't recall. :dunno

Two votes for Tioga Pass then.

*edit* you already vote for 9. One vote for Tioga. :x

So I voted for Hwy 1 from Leggett to Cambria, but its just the Legget part that's GREAT. No CHP, no traffic, PERFECT road serface.

Had to go with Sonora pass, if only because it's winter, and I desire that which I cannot have. 36 is another top contender.

In other news, I think tepesquet road should be in the top handful, and I agree with Canyonrat- Legget-westport is definitely the highlight of Hwy 1 for me, the rest is too often crowded and slow.

I'm going to have to come to one of these rallys someday, they're sounding pretty good.

No argument from me. The very best of 1. :ride

I know Tepusquet well. It's a personal fave. Speaking of Tepusquet and BARF rallies, RhythmRider got some vid of jdubau and me on it during the 2009 spring rally. :teeth

Get over yerself!!!
You say close to the bay area's good, but all the roads near the bay area are ruined from cops & squids, & f'in bicyclists.

Uhhh, no Skaggs? No HWY 70? No La Porte rd? No 44 over Lassen, to WHY 32, to Chico? :(
I voted 36, cuz it's great, and then there's all them other great roads up there too.

I dun hit some great roads last weekend; 128 from Cloverdale to Mendo, 20 from FB to Willits, then HWY 162 to Covelo. That'd be at the top of my list cuz the scenery is so beautiful; water falls, rivers, creeks, snow covered mountains, spectacular vistas, light traffic with lots of passing opportunities, not much LEO.... But unless have an enduro bike the road goes nowhere, so you have to turn around nd ride it back. Life's a bitch! :laughing
