Baja GPS sources?

Now flyin' solo...
Hey all, so I'm green-lit from both work and the GF to disappear with my friend Terry into Baja in early November. We're going to do a week+ ride in all running the standard (it seems) loop: Tecate -> San Felipe -> Gonzaga Bay -> El Rosario -> Erendria -> Mike's Sky Ranch -> Tecate. I'm wondering if folks have any tips on GPS map sources for the area, anyone? I seem to recall reading about Bica or Bici maps on Adventure Rider so I'll go look again there, but I'm here at work ( :shhh:wave:shame ) dreaming of the ride and wondering if any BARF folks have Baja GPS tips to share. Thanks.

In case anyone cares we depart Saturday, November 7th... :ride

You definitely want the bicimapas. All the others suck. The paper AAA map is actually pretty decent. I have one if you want it.

If you want challenging terrain, go to the score website and download the baja course files.

change .txt to .gdb

I'll get the bicimapas then (edit: Baja section of bicimapas just purchased!), thanks for confirming. I've got what I think is a good paper map but wouldn't mind checkin' out what you have. Are you around this week for me to roll down and grab that from you? Let me know!

I'll give that a look. Do you by chance know how far in advance folks will be down there pre-running the course? We wanted to go a bit later in the month to watch the race (if nothing else, end our trip in Ensenada to watch them take of from the start) but the timing just wasn't right.

Thanks Chris!

They release the course three weeks before the actual race, and you may not want to get mixed up with the prerunners if you're on an adv style bike. And you don't want your route to be running the course in reverse. The race course uses many of the regular dirt roads. Plan carefully.

You also might want to check to be sure Mike's (and any other places) will have rooms available since all the racers will be down there.

That's precisely why I'm asking, I'm just not up for being a speed-bump out there on the 950! :laughing

Yup, already on that and we have plans B and C just in case places are full-up. :)

I received their email last night, tonight I have to send them my GPS ID number so they can generate an unlock code for me then we'll see. :)

Were you able to load your bicimapas? I could not get it to load for love or money.
I'm finally back now that I received my unlock code for the bicimapas I ordered and they loaded up just fine, no problems, no issues. :thumbup

In case it matters, I loaded them on to a Garmin 276C straight from MapSource on my NetBook laptop.

I was just in san felipe in April, If your camping theres plenty of spots(RV/Tent lots) right on the main strip next to the beach, also looks like you can pick any ol spot on the beach and camp for free. There were little tent city's popping up over night on the beach. We stayed at El Cortez 1/4 mile walk to the strip and they let us wheel our bikes up to the door. $90 a night.

For insurance we used Baja Bound even if your bike is not listed call them, they can work it out.

And if your on the road and come across those big metal speed bumps that look like "bots dots" don't hit at speed, they'll bend your rims.

Thanks for the tip, I think that in San Felipe we're definitely lookin' to camp but we'll keep El Cortez in mind. :thumbup

Yup, I've been doin' my homework plenty already and Baja Bound has been recommended numerous times so we're going with them.

Extra good tip, thanks! :)

Try thumpertalk.com or advrider.com. Especially adv. Those guys are big on the gps stuff. There is a gps only section there too.

For the record, I'm hooked up. The Bicimapas are great and went on to my GPS unit no problem. I first heard of Bicimapas over on ADV so been there done that. :)

Thanks for the help y'all, I'll be posting a ride report fo' sho'!
