Back from Oceanside, and lost an outdoor kitty. :(

Got back from Oceanside last night, was out doing some work in the backyard today. Found one of the outdoor cats that adopted us, black cat we named Stubby. Always had the sniffles, and was apparently the mom for most other cats in the area. She had curled up in one of her favorite spots in the yard, and passed away.

We buried her in a shady spot under some trees, where she liked to hang out, placed the marble stone we had used for Alexander Mittens The Great over her resting spot. Gave all the kitties hugs, if you have a cat, give it a hug, and be happy they can annoy you and wake you up in the morning by romping about.

Stubby had a good life, at least once we moved in, had a little house to sleep in during the winter, and would wait in the front yard until I got home, then run into the back and wait for food. Even knew the sounds of my motorcycles, and would be waiting out back for me when I would ride up on the MC.

Every want to see a buff bald biker dude cry? This would have been the moment. :cry

Stubby was better off by knowing you.

Thanks, this hit me extra hard for some reason. Stubby was feral, but had been caught, fixed and released, but not before popping out quite a few other cats in our area (also all caught, fixed and released). Like I said, Stubby always had some sort of sniffle, for at least the 3 years we have been here. Yet was the queen of the area, I've watched her chase off raccoons 3 times her size. Didn't really think about it, but the couple weeks before we left, I was seeing less and less of Stubby in the mornings, and when I got home from work.

No idea how old she was, but judging by her offspring, she probably was in the double digits. For an outdoor cat, that is pretty impressive.

I'm glad we made her life better, and she had a place to sleep when it rained. I even got her to the point where I could skritch her butt when I put food out in the morning.

I'm sad, sad to see her go, my little greeter when I got home, but I'm glad that we made her life better, and she was able to lay down in a comfy place, in our yard.

get it while it's easy
not hard to imagine being a creature living in a harsh world where it is simply a matter of surviving one day to the next. feeling that any degree of comfort is a luxury not meant for you. and when someone comes into your life, keeps you warm and safe - i too would listen for them, look forward to every moment i could spend with them, and love them with all my heart. a man caring for one small life. if it were mine, i would be eternally grateful.

rest in peace stubby. much blessing to you and to the man who brought you comfort and deeply mourns your passing. you may have otherwise gone unnoticed. but in his heart, you are the very dearly departed.

my deepest sympathies V. you're a good man.

Sorry to hear it. :( I picked mine up and scratch behind his ears. He tolerated it longer then usual, since it's his feeding time and he wanted food. :laughing

Good on yer Dave, and RIP Stubby. Our nut-jobs will get some extra attention tonight (as if we would have a choice anyway).:rip:rose

I gave our bubba some loves when i read this earlier, and he promptly fell asleep on my chest. rare these days for him to do that. He's back on my lap now.

Eternal sunbeams and foil balls, Stubby.

A cat adopted you, and you cared for it in the best years of kitty's life. Thank you sir.

Per your instruction, I went and loved on my cats a little just now. Sorry to hear about your Stubby moving onto that big mousing ground in the sky.

Went out on the deck later last night, the other ferals came up, and one of them was furiously bumping on me, purring and just being extra loving with me. I sat down and they circled around, giving me extra attention. Then they went down and sat on the retaining wall next to where we buried Stubby. They sat for a bit, then went off to do their usual exploring. :cry

Neighborhood cat, Scooty and I had a similar relationship; I cooked steak, he ate steak; I provided backyard wildlife area, he protected the wildlife area.

We found him in the back yard, curled up at his normal observation post, but observing no more :(
