Avoid Mines Rd. between Alameda & The Junction

Drop-in
FYI NEW GRAVEL on Mines & Del Puerto Canyon Rds

Santa Clara County is repaving its portion of Mines Rd from the Alameda/Santa Clara line south to the Junction Cafe, and from the cafe east to Patterson. They're just laying down oil and gravel, so avoid the roads for a while.

The road from the cafe west to Mt Hamilton is untouched, but the county is doing work on the upper portion of Mt Hamilton Rd towards San Jose.

Calaveras Rd is okay.

They graveled it within the last week. No fun and dangerous on a bike.

Unless you're into that sorta thing :ride

did it yesterday. not that bad. good environment for practicing efficient i.e. non dramatic lines. similar to the fall line in skiing. in ccat land, squids belong in soup. first, you take about 8 onions, and slice 'em razor thin, then you....:laughing

Adverse Selection
Merged.

The IOM authorities were chipsealing while we were there. Michael Dunlop says....

It's not unrideable, just far from ideal and might take down a newbie rider. I was mostly worried about my bike getting sandblasted.

There's pavement in skiing?! For falling on?!

you bet! you should have seen the look on the face of the guy in his duc yellow 2014 Vette, cruising with his sweetie, knowing his lower body panels were getting sand blasted! the sweetie probably saying, Honey, whats wrong..?
Oh..nothing..nothing at all...

wasn't chip seal..was gravel prelim for real tarmac. Ham to SJ was like three week old perfect asphalt, with curious gaps.

I was planning on taking a newer rider up to the Junction from the Libmo side this afternoon. That portion of the road is still clean, correct?
Well, as clean as Mines gets, anyway.

So on Friday I am planning on riding Mt Ham and then Del Puerto Canyon East on my way to Bass lake.

Seems like all that road is being worked on and really isn't worth riding. Correct?

Damn, I really didn't want to have to resort to hours of 580E.:thumbdown

I didn't ride down Del Puerto Canyon, but all of mt.hamilton is just fine up to there. Aside from the "normal" rocks and crap in the road.

Go for it. Learn how to ride it. Don't let it intimidate you. I actually like it when my bike is skating around.

del puerto is ok-chipsealed from the junction to the stanislaus county line, but fine from there.-the chipseal is packed and easily rideable.

Thanks for the info, I have no problems with some packed chipseal, either way it will be a hell of a lot more entertaining than taking 580E.

Roll on my half day Friday! :ride

Could be tough issue...across the spectrum of every last rider out there.

But...This is where judgement comes from, and skill building, and paying attention..
So a rider can cope with what comes up.

A rider that doesn't do anything to learn these things, is the scary-est, case out there.
