AV HDMI Experts? New TV and HDMI Confusing

Picked up Sony Bravia X90ch (900h) and hooked it up to my Pioneer VSX 1021 AV Receiver.

The Sony has a HDMI Arc/E-Arc input. My receiver has 1 HDMI out and it supports HDMI ARC and is working.

I have a DVD player plugged into the DVD HDMI input on my receiver. Also an Apple TV plugged into a HDMI input on the receiver too.

I have the TV hardwired to the internet and it works great. Audio travels from the TV to my AV Receiver. I get audio watching anything via the Apps (android tv) on the Sony.

What does not work:

Dvd and AppleTv wont show up on the tv with the current HDMI cable in the HDMI Arc input on the tv.

Question:

Do I simply need to run separate HDMI cables from the DVD player and the Appletv DIRECTLY to the tv now and instead of selecting the inputs on the receiver, its down on the tv? Since there is not another HDMI out on my receiver, this is the only thing I can think will work.

Essentially audio and video in from DVD to tv input via that HDMI cable and the audio back out from TV to my receiver via the HDMI ARC?

I imagine newer AV Receivers allow all devices to plug into the receiver? Mine is old and does not support 4k anyway. Maybe I'll upgrade.

Tv/reciever arc/arc. Everything else into reciever.

That's how I have it and DVD or Apple TV arent coming up on TV when receiver is changed to those inputs.

I'll try channel 3 as well.

Maybe there's a setting in the tv I don't know about. Its much more complex than the 11 year old plasma we were previously using.

I ended up putting HDMI cables to the TV, then a Digital Optical Audio Toslink to my receiver.

You just bought a 4K set running Android TV. You can throw the Apple TV in the garbage now.

You need to upgrade the DVD and receiver to something that can handle 4K content.

That doesn't make sense. All the DVDs I have I should be able to play on this tv, they don't have to be 4k dvds. The TV is capable of 4k but not mandatory.

Only reason I want the appletv to work is because some apps on the appletv dont work on android PLUS I bought some games on appletv and want to use them.

Ill likely just go the separate cables as a solution but I'm pretty sure it's just a setting issue and something small I'm misssing.

There's a lot of shitty hdmi cords, I'd start with swapping ones you know are working with ones you're not sure about. Also make sure everything has the latest updates.

My sony (android) tv is a little finiky about it sometimes but it works. The samsung tv software is a lot better in my experience. I know that doesn't help

Just to be sure, they're all directly connected right? Those keystone jacks are nothing but trouble.

Double check you have the correct input selected in the TV. I agree about ditching crap quality cables, but the description of your setup sounds like everything should work fine. It sounds similar to mine. Xbox, Switch, FireTV all connect to different inputs on the receiver, then out to the TV.

Try using a non ARC HDMI input on the TV as ARC requires a newer type of HDMI cable.

If that doesn't work just call Crutchfield and they will help you even if you didn't buy the TV from them.

"I'm thinkin of buying this Sony TV that you carry but my friend has this problem with his. Is their a solution to this problem like plugging into the non ARC HDMI input?"

Sounds more like an HDCP issue.
Your AV receiver and Apple TV may not be able to complete the HDCP handshake.
Check your specs to see that HDCP can be handled between the devices and if it's automatic or if you need to activate a setting somewhere.

I've never used an Arc input as a pass-through like you were from the AV receiver.
It is great for being able to send signals through HDMI to power on/off and change volume using the AV remote as long as the AV receiver supports the Arc signals.
I would have done what you did and plug video inputs directly into TV and then Toslink to AV receiver. This is what I did with my Sonos setup and HDMI-Arc that the newer soundbar supports.
You might be able to control AV receiver volume with TV remote with HDMI ARC in use.

Optical cannot process the latest improved Digital Surround Sound formats but most are fine with just Digital 5.1.

For ARC or eARC to be glitch free the TV and receiver need to be compatible which is why in the OPs case he should avoid using that particular port.

https://www.whathifi.com/us/advice/...ng HDMI ARC does not require a new HDMI cable.

There might be an easier way to do it:

  1. Plug all your HDMI video sources directly into the TV. If it makes a video picture, plug into TV. Use TV remote to choose what you are seeing.
  2. Don't worry about ARC. You won't need it this way.
  3. Your TV should have an analog (RCA) audio out.
  4. Run that to your AV receiver.

That is the simplest way and that is how I set up my entertainment electronics for my parents. When they ask for tech support when they think the TV isn’t working, just tell them to keep pushing the input button on the remote and eventually the screen comes back to life.

Agreed - RCA won't do 5.1 or 7.1, but I don't think that's an issue here. If is issue - can just do TOSLINK from TV to AV receiver.

I don't think that TV's have had analog outs for at least 5 years.
