Arrived to work, nail in the tire

I have a 20 mile freeway commute home. It doesn't appear to be deep, but I'm leaning toward keeping the damn thing in. Thoughts?

That looks nasty. If you need to make it home, definitely leave in the nail. I've had this happen before, and I made it home OK. Took out the nail, and then the air came out, but I was able to patch the tire.

I'd try to patch it before riding home. Might damage the tire even more. Call around and see who nearby can sell you a patch kit and a pump.

go get a patch kit

should take 5-10 minutes to repair, it's quick and painless

'slime" brand makes an ATV/moto kit, it's simplistic I promise, do it at a gas station so you have access to air

Ps (if it's holding air, you can try pulling it out and seeing if it went through. 20 miles on the freeway will likely either push it through to a puncture or fling it out anyway, I would rather find out while parked)

pss: if that's you in your avatar, just post a "HELP" thread and some "gentleman" will likely come save you. damsel in distress and all. a lot of trustworthy peeps on here

Last time I patched my tire, it went flat again after 10 miles.

I'm going to ride it, and try to make it home. Reason is...I don't know when, and how long the nail has been in there. For all I know, it's been in there since this morning, and I've been riding with it since.

The tire is holding air, so I'm going for it.

Damn

Patched or plugged? Internal patch or tube patch? If you plugged, sticky rope type, mushroom type or?

I've had rope type plugs develop slow leaks after a few thousand miles. I have had an internal patch that was done badly leak slowly right away. I did my next two internal patches myself, and they held until the tire wore out.

FWIW the only plugs I've ever had leak were in tread grooves. I think they hold better in the tread itself.

It was plugged.

You did it wrong. RTFI.

I know I said "I" did it, but I didn't do it, the Roadside Assistance guy came out and did it. I have video of that, too. Looking back, I know what he did wrong. He didn't cut enough of the excess plug; there was still some sticking out.

Yeah, exactly, I was thinking the same thing. I thought it was going to be some trick where he pulls it out and sticks the plug in without losing any or very little air. That was as exciting as watching paint dry... :|

At Alice's my buddy's bike was getting a lot of attention...when we finished breakfast someone kindly pointed out the massive nail in his tire. He made it home ok, but that doesn't mean anything.

I've seen just the opposite where too much was cut off on a tire that was almost worn out. There was very little rubber holding the plug in place by the time the rider got home.

The mushroom plugs tend to stretch a little bit when you go to cut them. Usually it's better to have about 1mm sticking out then have it down in 1mm. Of course, if the tire is fairly new with lots of tread, then it wouldn't be that bad to cut it a bit short.

So why did you include TWO of the huge photos of the nail, both apparently identical?
