Are we scared yet?

highlander

Been around
In the old days we used to put the key in and ride , the helmet laws came and we had to put those on.
Now we fully suit up ( 'cause were scared of falling down ? ), add GPS ( scared of getting lost ? ), add radar ( scared of getting a ticket? ), add heated jackets , vests , gloves , grips ( scared of getting cold? ), add tank bag ( scared of riding with just a wallet? ), add volt meter ( scared of draining the battery? ), add lights ( scared of the dark? ), add bigger windsceen (scared of a little wind? ), add saddlebags ( scared of travelling light? ), add top box ( scared the bags aint enough ?).
Are we scared yet ( or maybe just getting smarter )
:shhh
Whad I miss?

As in, I would rather ...
Scared?

never rode prior to the mandatory helmet law. would have worn one anyway. not scared, SMART

Never ride without a minimum of helmet/gloves/jacket/boots. Never considered riding without that. not scared, SMART

GPS, heated gloves/jackets/grips - it is called progress. From your implication we might be better off on single cylinder chain driven modified bicylces.

Extra lights - dont have them, but scared - yeah, maybe. of NOT seeing the deer on the side of the road. again, a SMART idea.

Tank bag? Well, I have a hard time fitting a bottle of water in my wallet.

Volt Meter? Dont plan on installing too many electrical extras, so not an issue. Good idea, if one does add that stuff.

Bigger windscreen? Well I am 6'5". The stock FJR screen is too small for me, so I got a larger one. Does that make me scared of the wind? It did create some added buffeting and wind noise. I guess I am scared of loosing my hearing.

'add' saddlebags? Well my FJR came with them stock, so that doesnt fit. as far as travelling light, I do, have, and will continue too. I will also load down the bags, add a tail bag and a tank bag if I feel like it, and have.

Seems we are getting smarter.

Highlander, that's kinda funny! I vote for smarter though.

I froze my ass off and went into borderline hypothermia while stuck out in the New Mexico desert in the middle of the night (wearing jeans and long johns). Result: bought heated vest & chaps.

Added running lights to my old Venture- It actually helped to put out more lights. Not sure where to put them on the Hayabusa. :laughing

Seats? Always changed out the seat on the last 3 bikes to Corbins, gel seat on the Hayabusa. On my old GS850 with the stock seat- after 16 hour days for a week straight, I said never again!

Once I bought a tankbag, I couldn't go back. What a convience! Plus I'm always carrying 3 cameras, 3 pairs of gloves, 3 shields, several maps, etc. You get the idea. Plus I get to lean up against it while in full tuck! :wow

Where leather from head to toe, however I've walked away unscathed from every get-off due to it. Hard core believer. Full face helmet is just sort of 'duh' thing.

No GPS, although I've gotten lost lots of times, no radar dectector, try to be smart about where I ride 150mph :teeth , no speeding tickets in the last 16 years. And no volt meter although I've worn down every battery I think on each bike. One time on the GS850, I push started it for a week, because I was so poor, couldn't afford the $40 for a new one (in college).

I've had taller windscreen on every bike- but it helps for all the long-distance days. Can ride longer further with less fatigue! :thumbup

Moral of the story is, I walked into Roseville Cycle yesterday, strolled around the massive showroom, picked at the clothing & helmets, the shiny bikes- and realized I DIDN"T NEED ANYTHING!!! I've slowly acquired it all.

or so you think! You can always try adding wind protectors for hands to your Busa :laughing

I know the feeling. Last two sales @ Road rider, I was there early and walked out in 10 minutes when I realised I was checkig out items & had no intention of buying anything...

Ofcourse, I could always use a 2 way adjustable penske shock :)

I don't know about everyone else but in the pre helmet law days I would have rather pounded my nuts flat with a wooden mallet than put in a 500 mile day on any bike.

Now with Corbin
a gps
a tank bag
ect...

I've been known to be out for a morning ride and several hours later be calling from 5 counties away.

The conversation usually goes like this:

Me: Hi baby i'm running a little late.
Jan: Oh.Ok, well when will you be home?
Me: I dunno
Jan: Well where are you?
Me: I dunno
Jan: Well what good is that stupid gp(f) thingy?
Me: It'll tell me how to get back here again
Jan: BUT YOU DON"T EVEN KNOW WHERE YOU ARE!!!!
Me: exactly
Jan: ... I hate that bike
Me: Want to ride up to Napa when I get home?
Jan: Ok.
Jan: When should I be ready?
Me: I dunno.

Sorry I was unable to make it, it was totally unavoidable. Once you meet me you will see that sitting around talking, eating and playing with other peoples dogs are among my favorite things. :D
