Are Counterfeit Guitars a Thing?

I've been thinking about pulling the trigger on a Solo kit for some time now. Glad to hear about the electronics being crap as I would want to order a solderless kit with larger pots anyway and definitely a hotter set of pickups anyway.

I saw the one Darrell Braun built (great channel to subscribe to, BTW) and I've been looking for something that's finished in terms of the wood as well. There are five videos in the series, but here's his synopsis after finishing...

Well shit. Just read Guitar Center is filing BK. I wonder if I should wait for a mega sale or strike now while they still have that 4-year 0% financing deal going.

Guitar Center will go on, and on, and on. So many companies dependent on GC, even Gibson. Just under new management. But lack of new guitar players will hurt Gibson, GC and other guitar manufacturers. The guitar companies are in the same position as Harley Davidson...

Most fakes are found on eBay, Chinese ripoffs, an astute guitar expert would see the differences in the headstock and in similar parts. Usually the sound from such guitars are sub-par, especially the badly wired pickups.

Some companies, like Ernie Ball MusicMan, has a nice service, you email them the serial number and they tell the background, of if it's a legit guitar or not.

For me the EBMM Steve Morse is the ultimate LP, a Les Paul done right. But that's just me.
