Are car drivers becoming too courteous?

I understand the law. A more dismal writing of something that has caused more problems than it solves I've never seen. On a motorcycle I can get around the cars following a bicycle with not too many problems, even though I understand I'm fudging the law. But now you have lines of cars following another car until someone in line gets frustrated and attempts to make a pass, endangering everyone coming the other way. Since this law was passed I've had many encounters with cars, in my lane, passing a bicycle because, like you said, they have no ability to estimate the width of their vehicle or the room to the bicycle.
So, the choice has become, create a dangerous back up on 2 lane roads or break the law and endanger others. Insanity in my opinion. It's even worse when you have bicyclists who insist on riding side by side on these roads.
